A great story about the early weeks of Queen Amidala and into the events of The Phantom Menace. I loved learning about the handmaidens and where they came from. Each girl has her own abilities and skills that help the queen in some way.

I would have liked to see The Phantom Menace intertwined more seamlessly. Because we know the story already, there was only small snippets to show the current time and events of the movie but it was largely glossed over with large jump cuts.

This book gave me everything I wanted. Padmé content. Canon lesbians. Menstruation. Canon bisexual!Sabé. Deep love for The Phantom Menace. Women supporting women.

10/10 would recommend to anyone who loves Star Wars, or honestly even anyone who doesn’t love Star Wars and just loves a good female-centric story.

This was a fun book to read. I’ve always liked books about royalty, political intrigue and strategy. I liked that teenage girls were portrayed as clever, cunning, brave and heroic.

I did find the plot a little bit unevenly paced, but the good parts outweight the not so good parts. However, I didn’t like that after some point the plot is limited to fill in the blanks of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and nothing more, so there’s a constant jump between scenes. This book assumes that the reader has already watched the film. So in essence, this is for Star Wars fans.

This book was published as a prequel to two already released books, so maybe if I had read those first I would’ve liked this one more. Still a solid entry. I love Padme and I will consume anything related to her. If you’re a Star Wars fan and love her as much as I do, this book is for you.

I received an e Arc from net galley EK Johnston does it again. Great follow up to Queen’s Shadow. This takes place before and during Phantom Menace. More backstory and growth of Padme and her handmaidens. Highly recommend.
