Just the sort of thing i needed to snap me out of a reading drought. This book is a great sequel-acting-like-a-prequel for Queens Shadow.

It takes comments and untold stories from QS and fills in the back story. It takes off screen time from TPM and fills in gaps perfectly.

A nice, self contained read. Now I’m off to watch TPM again to see where parts of the book can be seen in the background.

I kind of liked this one more than [b:Queen's Shadow|40887318|Queen's Shadow (Star Wars)|E.K. This one took place prior to and concurrent with Episode I, and with that, we learn more about the political structure of Naboo. I was always curious of a society that was a democracy yet elected a monarch to rule and displayed all the trappings that went with royalty. E.K. Johnston fleshes that out nicely, along with Padmé's handmaidens and their roles within her court.

An enjoyable read, but a bit fractured. The short asides about Darth Maul, Anakin, Obi-Wan, etc felt unnecessary, added nothing and broke up the flow of the story.

The details and backstory were fascinating. I loved that it wasn’t just a retelling of ep 1!

Pretty good. Fills in some blanks of characters from pre-Episode I: Phantom Menace to the end of Phantom Menace. If you’re expecting this series to be all about Padme, you would be wrong. This series is about all the handmaids together.

I do think Johnston does an amazing job of taking the tone of different characters, such as Maul and Palpatine. So many Star Wars books are written by men and I HIGHLY appreciate a female gaze, a female perspective and voice. It’s refreshing and enjoyable.

As far as story, it took a few chapters to get into and was not as good as the Queen’s Shadow. Also do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook, it’s very, very enjoyable. Music, sound effects, the voice of The Clone Wars Padme, just do it, any Star Wars fan will love.

As one of my favourite characters, Padmé’s story is always fun to hear. I loved how it filled in the gaps of her rise to power and added some interesting hints to other events of the world and film. I also love Anakin, but it was refreshing to have him be such a small part in Padmes story, especially with how they end up *cries*
