There were a lot of story elements that I really liked, but the pacing was off for me personally

I’m just going to say it right off the bat, WOW!
I got the physical book a while back, y soy una mensa for letting it sit in my TBR partially finished and not picking it back up until now. After reading Kuxtal Academy, I should have picked this up immediately. Mikayla’s writing style and the way she brings her characters’ stories to life is absolutely beautiful.
Blood & Brujas is packed with action, I was hooked from the very beginning. With epic battles between Vampires and Brujas, there’s plenty to keep you on the edge of your seat (or wherever you’re reading).
Dayanara’s story is filled with revenge, power, and betrayal, but even in the midst of all that, this beautiful Bi-Bruja manages to find love and comfort, even when it seems scarce. And her relationship with her mother? Whew. It filled me with rage (maybe this hit a little too close to home), but I was here for it. Despite cussing out this character for half the book and getting all emotional, there was something cathartic about how it all played out.
Now for the good stuff, tehehe. The worldbuilding gets richer and richer as the story progresses. I cannot wait to see more of it in book two, especially how the magic system develops and how Dayanara hones her new abilities. The sexual tension? HOT. And when it finally breaks? Esta que ARDE.
And her love interest? Kaiser, El Rey Falso and Zuri, her handmaiden? Kaiser, bro, chill. Why are you so obsessed? I get it, Daya is HOT AF, but take it down a notch. As for my bb girl Zuri, ahhh! Daya and Zuri’s connection is EVERYTHING. Oh, and did I spot a possible third love interest? Axel?? Please let this turn into a bigger why-choose situation.
That ending, though, WTF!!! But honestly, I should’ve seen it coming. Mikayla lives for giving people little mini ataques cardíacos and keeping us wanting more.

I was really enjoying it…until I wasn’t. It seemed so promising in the beginning but the plot just seemed to take forever in some places. I like Daya’s character but she just doesn’t seem to have much development (maybe that will come in later books). I was getting very heavy Manon vibes from her for a while but, again, no development. A lot of the characters just feel kind of flat to me. I didn’t hate it but I don’t think I’ll be reading any more. I skimmed the last 10% just to be done with it.

Did I have a fun romp? Yes. Will I read the second book? Yes. Would I reread it? Yes. Did I think this was good? Um.
It had the potential to be something above what it was. It failed rather spectacularly.
I do love a murderous woman, but Dayanara's impulse to kill any problem grew tiresome. I don't buy that you'd ask your servant if she was loyal to you or her king and then go solely off of words if I've been told you don't trust anybody. I don't buy you'd be betrayed multiple times and still decide to trust another king because of some heart connection (oh yeah and a nice room along with a cool closet and some sex). Her characterization swung from childish and inconsistent into I'm a witch warrior and I'll cut off your head. Cool, feel free! Maybe you'd be doing me a favor at this point.
It was a vibe sure.
But here is my remaining gripe with romantasy that spans many, many books. If actual thinking makes your books fall apart, then I'm a little disappointed.
Also, if we're trying to counter or subvert the eurocentric traditional fantasy, you have to do it well in order to make your point. This did not succeed. There are other better diverse recs out there that don't have to be propped up by the crutch of tropes.
But if you want to not think and watch a woman terrorize men, please be my guest. It's probably better that way.

Why, the HECK did you guys allow me to wait so long to read this? I LOVED THIS BOOK. The FMC Dayanara is ME. I’m actually sure Mikayla wrote this book about me but idk. My entire time reading it I was like “is this freaking play about us?”
The women empowerment, the feminine rage? CHEFS FREAKING KISS GOSH.
Don’t even get me started on the spice?! I was actually sweating 🥵.
The storyline is beautiful and I actually loved the writing in this. The characters were so well written too! I became obsessed with some characters and enraged at others. This book pulled several different emotions out of me, so I really enjoyed losing my mind in the chat with live reacts.
I’m diving right into my ARC of Air & Essence because I HAVE TO KNOW what happens next. If you have not read this, do it today. Move it up on your TBR. Because this was quite the experience 😮💨
I received and ARC for this book and he was my first time so i'll try my best.
I did enjoy the book. the characters were pretty strong. Dayanara was strong, funny, spicy character and i think her development in the book was well done. Every character was unique in their own way and brought something necessary to the book. As far as i'm concern, Lupa, Dayanara's mother definitely needs some help, this woman is a piece of work. I will say no more HAHAHHA, you'll find it on your own.
The world building was good but i think the author is going to bring more substance in the next book. the magic system was well explained.
the only thing for me, I still found it a little bit difficult to connect with the characters, but maybe it's me. I found it difficult to fully dive in when the character have multiple love interest, I'm more like girl choose one, but it's all about preferences.
I'm still thankful, Mikayla trusted me enough with her book. I wish her success for the next one.
