Daisy Miller is a beautiful young American traveling through Europe, but runs afoul of the expatriot community: they don't approve of her behavior. Miss Miller is a free spirit, a flirt, and stays out late, with local young men. Alone. In the Victorian era, this was quite scandalous, but Daisy doesn't care what people think. She is also revealed to be a bit immature and inconsiderate, and maybe a bit shallow.
I really enjoyed this story that compared and contrasted the American tourists with their countrymen now living abroad.

I had to read this for class and I read it in about a day. It’s a short read but hard to get into. I really don’t understand the point or motive behind James writing this book. He is a talented writer and knows his way around imagery. However, the story itself was just kind of meh.

I know that this book is supposed to draw out the nuances of societal expectations, however ridiculous they may seem. And why do these expectations fall largely on women? Furthermore, why do other women perpetuate them? Only someone back in this time period would know, I guess. I get that Henry James was calling these out and examining them, especially the differences between European and American expectations. For me, this book called to light loud and clear that the American woman was not going to abide my these arcane rules, but instead live life how she wished. I was not at all happy with the ending though. Really James? You truly did Daisy Miller a wrong turn here, and it felt as if she was wrongly punished for wanting to enjoy her life sans these expectations.
The moral of the story: Don't go whoring around or you'll catch your death!
Short, easy read. I really wanted to like Daisy, but I just couldn't....
I was surprised by the ending and I felt that the whole story was melodramatic but the ending brought it together well
Idk I think we’re maybe just too far past the is she a “flirt” i.e. slut or is she just sooooooo innocent she doesn’t realize she’s being a slut thing.
I am admittedly having trouble separating the quality and style of this work from its substance. It is by turns saccharine and damning and I don't particularly like what Miller's saying. It makes backwards time travel less and less appealing.
I didn’t quite know what to expect from this. I was underwhelmed. I didn’t quite understand the point of it. Was it just to illustrate the “foolish“ American girl? She seemed quite ahead of her time for 1878. I would have liked more time to get to know the characters.
