Selene Blackstone works at Brimstone's Public Library, keeping her head down and trying to make everyone forget that she comes from a long line of witches. Thanks to her grandma and her evil witch ways, her family is cursed for all of eternity. None of the witches in the family will be able to fall in love or leave Brimstone. Then in rolls Aiden O'Hare, paranormal investigator, in town to investigate the Blackstone Family. Selene may just have found the man who can break her curse, and Aiden may have just discovered that witches really are real.....
What a fun book! This is book one in a new series. I am already looking forward to book two. I loved Selene and her friends. There were a couple of steamy sex scenes, so you probably wouldn't want your teen reading this. Anyone older than that who enjoys paranormal and fantasy books with lots of humor and fun characters will definitely want to check this out.

DID NOT FINISH: 53%

I was half way through when I realized I didn't care about anything. It's not a bad book - a pretty standard romance with some witchy magic in there. Just, probably not for me??? Which is ridiculous. They are adults and we have witches - it's my thing, lol.

This is my first BWWM book I’ve ever read, and I’ve seen those books on Wattpad, but...but not like this.

A paranormal investigator who doesn’t believe in the paranormal, and a witch who’s cursed to never leave town?

I’m here for it. All of it.

I was skeptical in reading this book for many reasons: one, because I thought I was going to be reading a bunch of sex scenes that don’t make sense whenever I see book like this. But the more I read this book, the more I loved the characters, including the relationship between Selene and Aiden that bloomed because she had a date that ghosted her, but then Aiden shows her how to be in a relationship? Even though he freaked out because she revealed to him that she was a witch one night after she saved him from a car accident that nearly happened.

But the one thing that made me mad throughout this whole entire book is how they treated Selene. Yes she’s a Blackstone, yes she’s a witch, and yes, she can’t do things like normal people can. But to just downright shun her like that because of what happened to her grandmother and such...I’m sorry, but that’s complete and utter booty to me. Unless she does dark magic, which she hasn’t, then she’ll be fine, no shunning at all.

And Aiden...poor boy really doesn’t like Christmas, huh? I can understand why, because of his family and stuff, but good lord son, all they want is to have some quality family time. And also his friend, Eddie, reminds me of the two from the Buzzfeed: Unsolved guys, Ryan and Shane, or the Winchesters (yes I said the Winchesters) but for Eddie to try and force the issue on doing the story on the Blackstone curse...I’m glad Aiden said that he’s not going to to do it, because it meant exposing Selene and her being a witch, and that wasn’t going to happen.

I have to say, my favorite characters throughout this book has to be Selene and Aiden, but also Noelle and her auntie, Bibi. I love those two so much, especially Noelle, Selene’s friend. She reminds me so much of some of my friends, and also I can see myself in Selene, mostly because she reads, works in a library, lives in a big house and has a cute dog. And she’s a LUNAR WITCH, and yes, I squealed because I played a Lunar Witch once in a ttrpg (but she was a worthian and they were baby.)

But I have to say, I can see Selene as me, which I loved so, so much. We love to read, we wear glasses, and we’re bloody different from anyone else (but sadly I’m not a witch. Which sucks. Wish I was, though. This is a really, really good book and I wish more people can read it so, so much.

This was a pretty quick, entertaining read. I like the two leads Selene and Aiden and felt they had believable chemistry. The paranormal/ witch aspect was a bit hit and miss for me. Selene, Noelle and her aunt didn’t seem to know much about witches/ the supernatural considering they were witches ( how they didn’t twig that what happened to Peter was magic related didn’t make much sense to me). There were also a lot of references to the Blackstone family being held responsible for the strange going’s on in the town but after Luna disappeared the only Blackstone’s seemed to be Selene, her mum and the absentee uncle Zee . I feel the author could have expanded on the Blackstone family tree and the magical world a bit more and added other witches to the story/ town without taking away focus from Selene. Overall worth a look especially if you’re looking for a Halloween/Spooky read.

I really, really enjoyed this book. It was exactly the light-hearted magic driven plot I was looking forward to in October. This book sees Selene, a witch, navigate being an outcast in a small town whilst also being cursed to never leave. Selene is incredibly relatable, oscillating between nerdy and incredibly sassy, and you find yourself routing for her the entire book. There were multiple scenes in this book that had me giggling to myself in public and even since finishing it I've still found myself looking back and laughing. Not to mention the plot twist! I completely did not see the twist coming and to be honest most of the plot was a surprise, something that rarely happens to me with books now. Everything about this plot was just so fun to read.

I did have some issues with some of the side characters though, Noelle being one. She's an awful best friend and incredibly annoying. Who actually says "I told you so" when their friend is genuinely hurt? The entire book sees her portrayed as entirely unsupportive unless she's getting exactly what she wants. Same thing goes for Eddie. I do feel this may have been an intentional choice though to be resolved in the sequel so hopefully they get a redemption arc.

I also do feel as if the relationship between Selene and Aiden took place a little too quickly and he was very accepting of the magical world immediately, which went against everything we were told about him. However, this didn't reduce my enjoyment of the plot and I look forward to seeing how their relationship plays out.

I'm very intrigued to see where this series is going especially as I've failed at predicting anything to do with it thus far.

(ARC Review) I ended up liking the book quite a bit but it took a really long time to get into it. While I enjoyed the characters and the town setting, nothing of interest happened for a good chunk of the book. It was a lot of waiting around for URides (the word "URide" is mentioned 34 times in the book.) instead of actually doing anything.

The romance portion was sweet and awkward which I loved, but sort of took a back seat to the "mystery" plot. I want more romance and shy, awkward encounters! I did enjoy the slow build to their relationship, it felt very realistic and their banter was funny and snarky. The steamy parts in particular felt realistic in a way you don't often see portrayed in Romance.

Once I realized this was going to be the first book in a series it sort of made sense, this was more of a world-building book rather than a true paranormal romance (sort of like a pilot of a TV show). It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Synopsis: Selene comes from a long line of witches who have been cursed and treated badly by the people of the town she lives in. Aiden is famous for being a paranormal investigator with his best friend, but he doesn’t actually believe in all of this. Till fate brings Selene and Aiden together in her hometown and weird things start happening and they have to join forces to bring the right people to justice!

Review: I was first introduced to Mila Nicks wonderful style or writing and character building through her book Love’s Recipe. It was a heartfelt read and an absolute surprise for me. So when she announced Black Witch Magic, I wasn’t going to miss out on the chance to read this fantastic book. From when I was a kid and I watched Witches, I was fascinated by them. There was a point in my college life when I did an entire paper on the Salem Witch Trials. My professors didn’t appreciate it, but it helped me get over my childhood fear of witches. So a book about witches and witchcraft? Sign me up.

“They were hopeless. It was more glaringly obvious than ever that they were two people lacking social grace.”

Enough about me, onto this fantastic book. Selene Blackstone is the granddaughter of a witch who has caused a bit of a ruckus in this Boston town. She’s always held responsible for things that go wrong, but honestly, she’s keeping her nose clean and her head down and getting on with her life. Selene is such a brilliant character - she works at the library, she’s curvy and she owns it, she’s a fantastic witch who is still taking time to learn her powers and she doesn’t take any bullshit. Enough of that lands on her doorstep, but she’s not interested. She’s also sassy and I love me some sassy witches!

And then there’s Aiden. He’s such a riot. Aiden’s a paranormal investigator, but he doesn’t necessarily believe in all this like his best friend Eddie. He’s more of the sarcastic sidekick and a little moody about the holidays. My favourite thing is that Aiden doesn’t care for Christmas. Which is perfect, because I’m someone who only gets excited on Christmas eve. The rest of the time? I’d be just fine without the holiday. Of course, Aiden’s reasons for not liking Christmas are very different from mine, but still.

“He hated the idea that there was a perfect woman out there for him, but Selene…”

Aiden and Selene are perfectly opposite and that’s something that I absolutely loved about their relationship. She’s all sunshine and he’s a bit of a grump around the holidays. They both love books and research and learning things and that somehow becomes their common factor. Their first meeting is cute and the subsequent ones are just as adorable. Obviously Aiden isn’t disclosed to Selene during their meetings, but when she learns who he is, her feelings for him get a little complicated. It’s safe to say that Selene doesn’t want Aiden digging into her family history for anything. Her sass comes into play quite well here and it’s interesting to see them navigate this and Aiden come to terms with what he doesn’t want and what he does want in this relationship with Selene.

There’s mystery, adventure and a whole lot of magic. It’s a spooky tale set during Christmas, so you get to enjoy your Halloween feels and your holiday feels and all together, it’s a fun read. I loved all the family and friendship dynamics. Aiden and Eddie have a great relationship and their struggles through it all also feels so real and painful, but it’s a strong bond. Selene and Noelle have the most amazing friendship that is tied together with magic, love and familial relationships. I could have enjoyed an entire book of their friendship, not gonna lie.

“Only she would think of books as she kissed Aiden thoroughly, earning a small smile out of her lips pressed against his.”

It took a while to get to the crux of it and at times, I was slightly tempted to push ahead and see where things were going. The twist was unexpected, but I felt like there was too much build-up. Exploring Aiden and Selene’s relationship was crucial, for sure, but there were parts that we could have skipped to get to the end. Either way, this was an enjoyable read and one that I would recommend for anyone looking for a fluffy, but fun read!

Thanks to Mila Nicks for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
