this one just didn’t really do it for me. i didn’t find it thrilling in any way, wasn’t interested in the villain as he was pretty one-dimensional. the attempt at humanizing him by having him search for his mothers love fell flat for me.
Three and half stars. Fun but dated. a mediocre middle is book ended by an interesting beginning and a satisfying ending.

Competently written, this book still ended up being a massive disappointment. While it's clearly meant to be a horror story, it's main villain is to silly to take seriously.
I knew this book was going to miss its mark when during his first appearance the villain turns into a pile of rats. I could live with that, but when his clothes separately turn into other rats this was just going to far.
There are some interesting bits, such as the chapters written from the dogs point of view, but even then these are outweighed, and probably outnumbered by the time spent complaining about the early 90s societal collapse.
All in all not worth the effort it took, and it's was an easy read

I am giving it five starts because I found it enjoyable. I find good "light" reads how to find and I have enjoyed some of Koontz's books more than I thought I would from their marketing. Though this may sound corny, I like the fact that his books try to be somewhat moralistic.
