Reminiscent of Harvey Pekar, Wilson is a tragic but satisfying character.

Wilson, a collection of anthologies follows Wilson, a brash loud mouthed man trying to find his way in life. Wilson is often at a whim of his emotions and struggles to filter which thoughts he voices. At times Wilson sees himself at the end of the line, wondering why he is carrying on, & passing heavy scrutiny onto others, yet though his connection with family he find a renewed interest for life? Who knows, Wilson certainly has his head up his own ass.

Wilson is unique in how each page serves as the end and the punchline to each comic, yet also often directly serializes the page before it.

Music Pairing(s): Leo Kottke - 6- and 12-String Guitar, John Fahey - Days Have Gone By Vol. 6

There's a reason this is one of the most celebrated graphic novels. Wilson is a wickedly smart, acerbic, and intermittently touching narrative that reads like 77 one-page vignettes. Between the constantly shifting artwork and either a punchline or awkward ellipses at the end of each page, it rarely picks up the steam of a classic narrative. However, this works in its favor as these choices led me to review pages more often than I would have normally.

Wilson is an insufferable conceited asshole desperate for human contact but utterly incapable of interacting with people like a normal person. He's also hilarious. Watching him fail his way through life is an exercise in schadenfreude, but nevertheless pleasant. Daniel Clowes has a great ear for these sorts of characters.

It is masterfully done. I like that the vignettes are set up like a comic strip with a little punchline at the end. The change in art for every page comes across beautifully. As a conceptual piece I'd give this 5 stars. But the problem is that Wilson sucks, and while there are a couple occasional chuckles and tender moments to be had, I found the read to be mostly unpleasant and I couldn't wait for it to be over. I feel cheated that I wasted any of my energy following this douche-bag's life. Worst of all is that the story follows him into his dotage, but you aren't even granted of the schadenfreude of his death. I would have liked this considerably more if the last act of this book was just page after page of someone beating the crap out of him.

This was a fun read, I liked the contrasting styles. I've always been a sucker for darker/depressing themes juxtaposed with lighter art styles. Felt a bit meandering, but that seemed to kind of be the point. Probably would have rated it 3.5 stars if that was an option, but overall I really liked it.

Pretty depressing, kinda disturbing, and at points I wondered what the point of this book was. Nonetheless, it gave me something to think about
