Goddess of Filth is excellent. A Bruja riff on The Craft that fully admits to and lovingly embraces that aspiration, while still being something very different. The Aztec focus of this novella was truly fascinating.

I will read anything V. Castro creates. Such a strong voice in horror. Badass!

I enjoyed this one but it felt really fast paced to the point of being clunky at times. This book has a lot of topics/themes it wants to explore and I felt that often was to the detriment of the book as a story. Also kind of to the detriment of those themes, the way it's explicitly laid out to the reader, could have used more show don't tell.
Still a nice and refreshing read, though

Goddess of Filth follows a group of friends nearing high school graduation who jokingly host a seance that ends with a surprise. Castro deals with themes like coming of age, sexuality, parental expectations, and religion in a very literal way. It's all tied into the horrors of being a teenage girl, and it hit those beats well.

The story was a bit brief and I felt like the build up was a little uneven. The writing was perfect both through the seductive and the gross parts - perfect for this sort of story. The Goddess of Filth was an interesting character as well. I wanted a lot more of the friendship interactions between the whole group. The ending of the book was exactly what it needed to be. When I finished, I felt satisfied, but I don't think this book will stick with me for very long.

I had it at a 3.5 but knocked it down after talking about it with my Bookclub.  The descriptions were amazing and the characters well fleshed out. As a Texan I loved the references and Spainglish. I live in a diff part of the state but still had the overall TX and very Central Texas vibes.

Main issues were sometimes POV was jarring (on audiobook) - and some places 2nd person was used when 1st would have been more impactful. It switched a lot which was fine but sometimes it was for no reason and was a distraction. Pacing was off a lot and made us confused sometimes. Also confusing is when this takes place. It felt like the 90s (especially an adult with the name Yolanda- if you know you know) but then she would Google something? Ending was sort of too tied up in a neat bow for the MC.

Will def be trying more from V. Castro!

A fantastic horror novella about the possession of a teenage girl. Powerful and unexpected - I think this author is officially on my auto-buy list.

i liked the beginning because that was a pretty good horror moment, but for what this was and how it wrapped up this story was way to long.

the idea of girls that are at a place in their lives where they want and wish to be somewhere else but their circumstances won’t allow them to do that and them trying to reach out to something -anything- to help themselves was great idea.

that turning dark and twisted was one as well.

but the rest wasn’t for me.

it just dragged on and on, became too focused on sex and unnecessarily bloody without real explanation as to way or how that helped the story along other then provoking and vulgarity.

i enjoy the shock horror moments more than drawn out suspenseful horror, so this was just not what i look for.

it wasn’t bad just not for me.
