I read the physical book last time and I really wanted to give the audiobook a try for this one. I cant decide what I like more! Both have positives and negatives, but as a whole, they're such fun books.

A nice subversion of a mystery in which a mystery writer (from the last book) is on a train where someone is killed. The author does a clever thing where he outlines how mystery books are written and follows certain guidelines which can be grating at times, but overall pretty enjoyable.

The mystery itself is clever and the characters are interesting, especially the main character and his partner. There are some tense moments, but everything else is lighthearted enough.

Hmm... this is a tricky one. I found it quite entertaining in parts, but overall it felt rather unremarkable to me. Right from the start, we are introduced to an entirely new cast of characters, most of whom are writers and publishers travelling on a train called the Ghan, heading from Darwin to Adelaide over four days. With so many personalities introduced all at once, I struggled a bit to keep track of who was who. It took me a while to distinguish them properly.

That said, I did enjoy the guessing game of figuring out who the killer was. It kept me engaged, and the reveal at the end genuinely took me by surprise. That aspect of the story was fun and cleverly done.

Beyond the central mystery, though, I found the book just pleasant rather than gripping. I often found myself putting it down and picking up other books instead. The pacing was uneven, and the characters felt a little underdeveloped. I think what kept me going was simply the desire to get it off my current reads pile.

It had its moments, and I appreciate the unique concept, but it did not quite leave a lasting impression for me.
