Just wasn't for me

Really sharp balance of humor and drama. Loved how complicated the women were. Kuku also has a real talent for creating character richnes within just a couple pages, even for super side characters, which added a lot of depth to the general world of the book.

This book's only flaws are 1) the dad character started to feel a bit too perfect by the end and his lack of character insight became more prominent as the book went on; and 2) the last quarter or so felt a bit rushed toward a wrap up.

Really great book tho. Can't wait to see what Kuku doest next.

I loved learning the stories of all the women in Temi’s life. The author showed the complexities and nuances that go into peoples’ lives and how hard it is to judge someone for their decision when you take a closer look at that’s person’s reasoning into how they came to make their decisions. This was also a book full of jokes and laughter while equally looking deeply into each person’s regrets in life.
I loved how in the end Temi asked each person a question she knew they wouldn’t answer, even though if they did, Temi said she wouldn’t get the surgery. That shows how many secrets we really keep from our loved ones and how it’s hard to explain why we want the things we want sometimes, even with all the background to back up the decision.

Come for the BBL drama, stay for the messy, lovable, and deeply human family dynamics.

This book starts with a young Nigerian woman wanting a BBL and her family spiraling in response but it quickly becomes more than just that. It’s a layered look at family, its secrets, grudges, mismatched love languages, and the mess of trying to connect. It’s also about the ugly side of being beautiful and the expectations that come with it. The humor adds lightness and the BBL plot was sprinkled through the deeper moments so they don’t feel so heavy.

The dialogue is very simple. I actually enjoyed it more as an audiobook because the narrator’s Nigerian accent and delivery brought the characters to life and made the tone feel more authentic.
