A delightful book that is culturally accurate.  I found this book to be well-written, but sometimes transitions in time/generation were confusing.  Great narration. This book would make a great play.

You cannot write a book this dramatic and give it an underwhelming ending. It simply isn't done.

Hilarious. If you need a book to make you laugh, this is it. It is interesting in how it goes from character to character that is involved. Some of the characters irritated me though.

Temi’s plight reflects the pressures on women today to conform to beauty standards.
My thoughts:
  • I liked that the history between each of the characters were so complex, gives great insight into how Temi came to be the way she is, and how they reacted to her revelation. (The family essentially trying to get the “bbl demon” exorcised out of her did make me giggle ngl)
  • I loved that at the end she asked about all the elephants in the room and firmly resolved to get the bbl once she realised the family were all too ashamed of their pasts to answer her.
  • I did like seeing the perspective of each family member, showing the perks and pitfalls of each of them being seen as beautiful, especially by men.
  • However, I think there were a few too many pov’s and it got a little confusing to flit between them all the time. (Sorry to Big Mummy because I don’t remember anything else about her, her story could’ve been merged with someone else in the family tbh) It meant we couldn’t see more of the sisters after Ladun’s return, which I would’ve enjoyed.
  • The end question was a great one to think on - “would the bumbum finally make everyone love you?” But I was a bit annoyed at how abruptly it ended without us getting an answer - not seeing the aftermath of the surgery was a bit anticlimactic since I thought it would be the main point of the book

I finished reading Only Big Bum Bum Matters Tomorrow by Damilare Kuku. This humorous book follows Temi, the youngest in her household, who seeks attention in a society that places high value on big bums, and explores how not fitting into the ideal standard of beauty impacts her. The plot isn’t what I expected, as it explores, in a way, how communities can break down due to the complexities of human relationships and the importance of being there for each other in this crazy world we live in. Those around us need us, and, when neglected, can stray, seeking to feel seen, accepted, and loved by external sources that don’t actually provide genuine love.

In the book, we also see how generational curses are passed on when people become too caught up in their own problems and neglect the needs of their loved ones. This neglect can lead to feelings of inadequacy in a world where people are judged and labelled.

To summarise, I enjoyed this book, and it had moments that made me laugh out loud. However, I feel it was a little lacklustre – perhaps the author tried to do too much with this book, and the complexities made the impact feel slightly underwhelming. It was definitely a juicy read. If you enjoy gist, you’ll enjoy this, and it still holds meaningful themes that emphasise the importance of community, communication, and truth.

Damilare Kuku really has a way of talking about heavy, reflective topics in a lighthearted, humourous and chaotic way.

I honestly feel for Yemi and the way the author framed the reason for her decision throughout the story was just great.
