This was ridiculous and confusing and nothing like i’ve ever read? Did i understand much? No, not really. But then again I think it was purposeful in being something we can’t grasp. Grief, after all, is a lot like that.

I think Max Porter may be my new favourite author. This book is just extraordinary.

Moving on, as a concept, is for stupid people, because any sensible person knows grief is a long-term project. I refuse to rush. The pain that is thrust upon us let no man slow or speed or fix.
I decided to read this book 4.5 months after losing someone close to me and there are segments of this book I can relate to and other parts I cannot. But what this book does well is transfers your grief into the character. For me it wasnt my wife or partner that passed away like the dad, but there was a moment when the dad suddenly realised he would never see one of her stray hairs again on the floor. I felt as if I lost my partner when I read that when that isn't the case. I'm feeling grief for someone of a different relation I felt that moment so hard.
In times of grief there are big moments, funeral, money and asset management, will readings, visitors and many more moments. But this book ignores those parts and focuses on the dad, boys and crows inner monologue during very normal moments, tidying up, having dinner or even attempting to go back to work for then the crow to interfer or make those moments harder or less manageable. I enjoyed this book a lot and I have 3 direct quotes from this book that will rememeber for a long time. But I still dont understand the chaotic nature of the crow.

Confusing. Incoherent. Nonsense.
Quite ironic that the only thing that makes sense in this thing is its synopsis. The “story”, if I can even call it a story, is about a dad and his two sons dealing with grief over the death of his wife. There’s also a talking crow who spouts a string of nonsense and random sounds. Not sure if I completely missed the message but this is just bad.

Not sure I fully understand the crow sections, but I did find some of them quite entertaining. The last part of the book really punched me in the gut though. In the end. I think I was ready to feel it rather than understand it, which really made me appreciate it more.
