So I read this hearing/knowing about what "a rip off of Harry Potter" it was (even the back has a blurb from another author saying it's like Alice in wonderland, LOTR and Potter).... and yes, there is definitely some influence. The book has some echo's for sure, but still manages to be entertaining; in honest, I don't care if something ripped something else off so long as it adds it's own flavour to the mix.... It involves elves, who are more evolved and just more awesome than humans.
The younger characters for the most part are a bit different and slightly more complex than the first HP book though for that matter (with the exception of Stina- who acts like a soap opera villain)
Another interesting twist however, is the idea that in the story each character has a talent to be manifested, and there's different talents to be had. Each child learns one on one, and there is none of that "house" crap.... and they get to go home at the end of the day.
The most interesting departure from this to that "other series" is that although Sophie (the main character)doesn't feel that she belongs with her human family (despite excelling in the human world studies) there is still a bond that plays a integral part in the story and her choices later on.
The book is laid out in fairly small chapters and has a large text, knocking off 50+ pages a day is no challenge.
The flaws: I had a hard time keeping track of the names, some of them almost blurred together (a bit like LOTR there) and I will say the ending chapter was a little too perfect when they were going through he grades and well as seemed to break away from some of the teachers usual actions... *note* SOME OF THE TEACHERS*. As well this book is meant for younger readers, and it shows.... still doesn't mean I as a adult didn't enjoy it however. :3
Oh yeah, and although the ended is a little "too perfect" the Messenger definitely left it open for a (very intended) sequel.... If there is any thing that I really really hope she "borrowed" from the HP series (even though HP "Borrowed" from Enders Game, and the film Troll, among other things) is the way the stories managed to grow up with the readers in tone and scope.

I know I'm not the target demographic for this series, but I really hope the character development and writing gets better because I was not a fan of this book. And that is putting it nicely.
Initially, I felt like the story wasn’t building to anything and a lot of the real plot didn’t come together until maybe the last couple of chapters BUT I enjoyed the book all the same. The whole magical world with a young gifted person destined to save the universe has been done SO MANY TIMES but it was still enjoyable. The main protagonist, Sophie, was pretty likeable and I’d like to see what the next books have in store for her and the other side characters.

This book was sold to me as a “Female Harry Potter” and it’s not that. It’s not fair to either series to be compared to each other. I liked it, and I’ll eventually complete the series.
