This book was exactly what I was looking for after the book hangover Zero Repeat Forever put me in.
It takes place in space. It’s got a murderous morally ambiguous protagonist who I immediately fell in love with, and constant mind games!
Nemesis was created with one purpose, to protect and love Donia at all costs. Nemesis is a generically engineered weapon. When her mistress, Donia, is called to the Capital to be held as a hostage by the Emperor, Nemesis goes in her place pretending to be Donia.
The court at the Capital consistently play mind games and I loved how Nemesis engaged with everyone. She constantly wants to kill everyone because it would be quicker than playing all of their games.
Tyrus, the Emperor’s crazy nephew, is a great character. I love how he was developed throughout the book. Can’t say too much more without spoilers.
I honestly didn’t get much out of the setting for this book besides it being in space. It was plot heavy and character development driven.
The one thing I didn’t enjoy, but it was just because it was unresolved was the fact that, in the beginning we learn how Nemesis doesn’t have feelings, and that they are manufactured for Donia. Throughout the novel Nemesis starts experiencing other feelings despite the introduction of Diabolics not being capable of at all. Maybe it will be explained in the next book, but it bothered me that there was no explanation.
Overall, I loved this book. Anxiously awaiting book two which comes out next month.
~ Some parts were predictable
~ Direction of the story was an interesting choice...
~ The book dragged on a bit
~ Some phrases made me cringe

it basically revolves around my two absolute, most despised subjects, all wrapped into a pretty little bundle together ever!- royalty-with corrupt, absolute power, and a sick, twisted dystopian type society. it's also dark, bloody, and perverted.
while the ending, I guess, slightly could be defined as justifying to some, I have to say all I'm left with at the end of this long difficult journey, is the sickly bitter taste of bile in my mouth and a churning nausea in the pit of my stomach. ugh.
while I can see why this book would appeal to many, to me it held almost zero redeeming characteristics. (hence the two stars instead of zero.)
did I hate it? no. Will I continue with the series? no. did it hold any appeal for me at all? the space stuff was kinda interesting at times. the machines maintaining machines ala wally, interesting. the genetic manipulation for entertainment was thought provoking. I guess.
just my two cents. I'm still pretty surprised I got past the first few pages, much less the whole book. sister: that effort was only for you;) =/
and I feel I now need a shower...
edited as my thoughts solidified...
it's reminded me of other stories:
1) throne of glass. disguised in hiding amongst a pit of untrustworthy royal vipers. assassin. deadly MC with little thought to taking lives. secretly good. also the whole heir thing. in danger for his life from those family members who should love and protect him. and the dog.
2) the diabolics who protect the king remind me of the weapons in green rider.
3) Wally- machines maintaining machines, while humans slip into ignorance and stagnation.
4) the hunger games.
5) star trek- the space stuff...
6) religious zealotry used as a weapon for the powerful to get what they want and maintain power, reminds me of the cardinals/royals in Europe back in the days.
7) also every disgusting reign of every disgusting royal line thru history ever. ugh.
if I think of more, I may add them later.
also the "romance" if it can be referred to as such, is more like two children dealing with stress and wanting a confidante, than romantic love and connection. I didn't feel anything between them, besides it being a plot device. there is no true love between them. I felt this keenly when Tyrus effortlessly switched his attentions away from Nem on multiple occasions. now don't get me wrong. I do feel they could have had a true connection, or may in the future. there is potential there. I do believe they have some feelings for each other. but I don't really understand why any of it was placed into this book, except for the fact that Tyrus needs Nem to protect him and he 'needs' an empress to help him change things. and they are equals in many ways. in the ways they differ, they complement each other well. I also understand they are both acting the part in these moments. and some of you may believe it. I do not. I felt like the author should have left it entirely out of the equation if she despises romance that much. romance is not something I consume in half measures! in short it felt like an arranged power move, like a chess game, fought by petty children to win toys. and that is fine, but don't pretend otherwise.
I like Tyrus. I found his story compelling. he is interesting. though he is untrustworthy and vicious, under it all, he is a good man.
I also like Nem. at least some of the time. in a lot of ways they are perfect for each other. or they deserve each other. this is more a problem I have with the author than the characters. I feel like the author hates love, or at the very least doesn't like it much, so she just shoved it in, to appeal to readers. and because of that, I would have preferred it left out entirely. it's okay to have friends.
but I read books for the romance. mostly. occasionally I do like other kinds of stories, but most of them aren't. this story gave me none of that. and a whole plateful of all the gross crap I hate! and I just don't care about ANYTHING in this story at the end of the day, sadly. nothing really gets resolved. it's just kinda lacking, I guess.
so to anyone who may read this, I'm sure you will love it.
I won't take it personally.
I also despise reality trash tv.
more for you.
this just isn't my cuppa, and I would never have read it, but for my sis, so there you go. my opinions mean nothing. Ta!
