Ugh. Terrible heroine. Great idea for a story but so many pointless and dry chapters. Don’t read again.

Like the first one, I was unable to put this down. I needed to find out what happened to these characters. But unlike the first one, I felt that this novel had some unnecessary passages/chapters to it. (SPOILERS) for instance, the chapter with them at the seaside, I was hoping there would be some memory of a time Charlotte went there with Lilly and Edward before the war and that was the connection. It just felt like filler. But, once I reached the second half of the novel, I couldn't put it down. It was enthralling once I got to the parts that were important and that was the relationship with Charlotte and Edward and what they each meant to the other. It was obviously why Lilly loved and cared for them above all else in the first novel and it was important to see it.

I am not going to lie, the first half of the book had me really disappointed and I almost gave up on it.
After going from a clear 5 ⭐️s with Somewhere in France, I was super eager to read this “sequel” but it started so slow and it felt like not a lot was happening. I guess I just didn’t connect with Charlotte like I did with Lilly? I can’t really explain it.
I felt like the romance between Charlotte and Edward was an incredibly slow burn, to the point where I was actually convinced it wasn’t going to be a romance between them at all. The ending felt rushed and the epilogue was disappointing.
There were moments that I really enjoyed- Charlotte’s date with Mr Ellis, the scenes with Charlotte’s friends, the cottage in Cumbria, the flashbacks to tutoring Lilly and to the Christmas lunch during the first book. But overall, I feel like the book kinda fell flat and was a let down from Somewhere in France. I think my expectations were too high.

Another book that I was looking forward to reading. Despite having not read Somewhere in France. Which there were some hints of that book in this one but nothing really of importance that you can not read this book as a stand alone novel. While this book started out fine I found myself really having to stick with it. It was only after I got about half way and part of this was due to me skimming the book that I finally threw in the white flag and surrendered. I did not feel the chemistry with any of the characters or the romance that I was hoping and wanting between Charlotte and Edward.

Tore through this next one of the Great War series, mainly to distract myself from the pandemic tbh. I liked this one allright, but once again thought the resolution of the conflict was way too easy. More 2.5 than a full 3...

A companion to Jennifer Robson's previous book Somewhere in France where characters from that book play a part, but this book focuses on Charlotte Brown and her and England's life after the war is over.

I absolutely loved that Lady Elizabeth was still in the book and the reader was given a glimpse of how her and Charlotte Brown met and how their friendship formed. I loved that the spots in the past were spattered throughout the book and it was easily marked to allow for the reader to seamlessly glide in and out of the past.

Many times I finish a book and wonder.. now what happened to XX and YY? How did their stories end?....because the author has left me wanting more after I turn the last page of a loved book.

Jennifer Robson's second book, After the War is Over -- solves exactly that -- answering the 'what happened to' Charlotte, Lily and Robbie from Somewhere in France which while published in 2013 -- i read just last year. After the War is beautifully written and as you learn more about Charlotte (this book is primarily her story) you root for her and what she believes in.

Highly recommended as a stand-alone book or as the continuation to Somewhere in France.
