A charming, engaging story with a likable protagonist
I love a good prequel, and one to my favorite book of all time? Yes, please! I thoroughly enjoyed this, but nothing can beat The Two Princesses of Bamarre. That book showed me that the shy, quiet girls could become heroes even when that's not how we see ourselves. Although I found myself wanting to reread that book while reading The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre, I appreciated how completely different Perry was from Addie. They're two completely different heroines using the same magical items on their adventures. I loved all the easter eggs, but you could read this without having read Two Princesses. This book had good characters, messages, magic, and adventure, and as a kid, I'm sure it would have been one of my favorite reads.
I'm gonna be honest, I spent most of this book wishing it was Ella Enchanted - which is not fair to this book at all, but I think uneven pacing and generic characters made this story feel like a weaker echo of other Levine works.

I loved it. I read the other book many years ago and it is one of my all time favorites. So I fell in love with this book too. I wish I had the physic copy to keep like my other book.

It was ok. It all sort of comes apart in the final section of the book, but it rallies for a decent ending.
There's a lot of value in the message in this book, so I think it is very much worth reading. In my case the writing didn't click with me as much, but I know for a lot of readers this will be a superb reading experience so definitely give it a try.

3.5 Rapunzel as a female Moses-type set in a magical medieval setting. Pro: plot idea, complicated relationships between the characters. Con: odd pacing to fit in the plot ideas without necessarily flowing one into the other, the main character’s big character change is more abrupt and less morally motivated than would be preferable, and some characters really enjoy killing (but the book says it’s okay? Idk)
