I didn't realize there was a prequel to The Two Princesses of Bamarre, but then I saw this title recommended on TikTok! I was obsessed with Gail Carson Levine's work as a child, and Ella Enchanted and The Two Princesses of Bamarre were my favorites.
Peregrine was a fun heroine, and man do I love those seven league boots! Perry got up to quite a few shenanigans with them. The politics of the Bamarre and Lakti people was interesting, and I liked how it resolved.

Spoiler
with lots of last-minute king death by dragon and by magic
An extra star for baby Drualt who was the best part of this book and it was cool to see who he was before The Two Princesses of Bamarre. I found the family dynamics in this ruined the book for me (who would treat their long lost daughter so poorly when she returned, etc)—but it sadly wasn’t that amazing to start with. Ella Enchanted and The Two Princesses of Bamarre (and the short story fairytales) remains the only GCL books I’d recommend.
The beginning of this book was stilted, and hard to get into. Then in the middle, I got really into it, and the biggest problem was just that time moved so very fast randomly when most chapters plodded through regular days. But then at the end, it got kind of stilted again. I also feel like a lot of things were left unsaid that shouldn't have been, and the end was not bad, just a bit disappointing.
But the story was great!

I loved it. This may be her best book yet. Filled with love and confusion and decision and.... All the magic I hope to write myself someday, I couldn't put it down.
4.3/5
I honestly could not stop reading; whenever I had the chance I would pick this up and read. I loved The Two Princes Of Bamarre so I had to pick this book up and it did not disappoint. Although it kept throwing add-ons to the plot I could not keep up with it. So some parts I have forgotten and ut did not help towards the end of the book because I did not understand where the story was going. A different twist to the fairytale of Rapunzel.

Not as good as most Levine books, but did a great job setting up Two Princesses. Drualt was a character. <3 3.5 stars
A magical tale of courage and the power of one girl to change the world.
