I've had Two Princesses sitting on my bookshelf for over 10 years and it is still a book I remember fondly. I was really surprised to find Lost Kingdom and bought it immediately. I finished it with some mixed feelings. I loved the setting, the war, the Lakti culture, and Perry's destiny to lead the Bamarre over the mountains. But I found the Bamarre culture to be kinda annoying and it dampened my enjoyment. I really wish that instead of forcing Perry to become like them, sometimes treating her badly if she didn't, her family would have learned to appreciate some of her qualities and adopt them. I thought that with the two extremes we would find balance in the middle and that really didn't happen. Of course this is really because I personally don't believe in pacifism. I think that the Bamarre suffered badly and recognized this but did nothing to help themselves. They waited for someone to risk their life to save them instead of doing it themselves. I also really wish Will and Perry had more of a relationship in the beginning. I was surprised when they became love interests because it barely felt like they were friends.
The world building was pretty great and I really felt connected to the landscape. Bringing the tablecloth and boots back was awesome and the hearing shell was genius. A good addition to the Bamarre storyline and hopefully one day we will get the story behind Dru and Freya.

Interesting enough, but paced oddly and feels like it's trying to do too much in one story.
3.5. I didn’t love this, and I feel like I should have. The plot was fabulous, but the execution of it seemed simplistic.
2.5 stars
This was just a letdown. I felt like it was missing so much detail, action, and likable characters. I grew up absolutely adoring GCL's books. I still love her other books, but this one was just not my favorite.
Not to mention, I honestly did not like the narrator of the audiobook. She was not good at creating a voice for male characters. It was just comically bad. Her voices for younger characters were cringe-y and her voices for teens were just bad.
Just a let down for me. This could have been really wonderful with the political focus and the focus on family and love. I just really didn't like much at all about this book.

LOVED IT. As much as I loved the Two Princesses of Bamarre
Another great fairy-tale retelling of Rapunzel by Gail Carson Levine! This is a great prequel to The Two Princesses of Bamarre, either one could be read first, in my opinion. The story is thrilling and sweet!
