3.5. I didn’t love this, and I feel like I should have. The plot was fabulous, but the execution of it seemed simplistic.

I was a big fan of Levine growing up. This was an enjoyable read even as an adult.

Excellent book! It was good I recently reread The Two Princesses of Bamarre! Perry was a compelling and interesting character.

Consumed by audiobook, and the narrator was quite good.

Very cute story, loosely based on Rapunzel. Target audience may be 8-12? I was looking for an easy, entertaining read with a solid narrator for a drive where I knew my attention wouldn't always be 100% on the story. This fit the bill perfectly.

Fun read! I love Gail Carson Levine’s storytelling. It was a well written prequel!

It was well-constructed and charming at times but I never really started to like reading it. The style/tone of narration was very direct like “this is the way it is” but also the plot is formed around oppression and revolt. So when, as the reader, you’re learning things at the same time as the MC and she’s processing information as given facts and then going “this is how it’s going to be,” that felt diminishing. I loved the poetic verses.

One of my favorite childhood books has a prequel - and somehow I am just getting to it. This book allowed me to have the experience of reading an incredible Gail Carson Levine book for the first time again - never thought I’d be able to do that again! I loved returning to Bamarre and its world through a new lens, that verses if lore spoke of in the original novel.

Five hearts, since this one lives closer to my heart than in regular ratings.
