Why did it take me so long to read this!! Even though I didn’t have the best time in March I’m happy that I completed this book. I’ve had it sitting on my bookshelf for almost 2 years now, and it was worth it the whole time!
Going into this I didn’t know there was going to be three POVs with one set in the past, and surprisingly it didn’t feel like a garbled mess? The world building and storytelling was so clear that I could envision everything like an ongoing movie in my head. Normally with traditions, myths, Gods, and monsters bundled up in a book I find myself getting very confused and mixing up things.
Ekon and Koffi are my absolute faves. Their character development and depth did not falter while I was reading. Ekon had his moments but I digress 🌝.
Don’t even get me started on the plot twists and turns at the end. My mouth was hanging open, and I paused reading a bought the sequel for next day delivery because that cliffhanger???? Yea I need to know what happens next IMMEDIATELY.

I didn't really know what I was getting into when I started this book...the blurb doesn't really convey what this book entails. But I was so pleasantly surprised!
I really liked both of the main characters, Koffi and Ekon. They both had very different stories and each had totally separate motivations, but they joined together and in the end decided to put aside their own agendas and just be good people and help the people around them.
The worldbuilding is amazing; I felt really immersed in the world the author created. The magic system in this book is really interesting, but also kind of slow to develop. Koffi doesn't really know about her powers and only learns about them during the course of the hunt for the Shetani, so I'm hoping there is more info about the powers and the magic in the second book.
The ending had some great action and a fantastic twist, and it has me so so excited for the next book, which sounds so good! The set-up for the sequel was great, and I am so intrigued by what will happen. The worldbuilding just seems to be getting bigger and better!
