Too much boating jargon nonsense. Otherwise pretty standard.

“The Whispering Statue” is the first Nancy Drew book that I’ve re-read that I found myself getting lost in. It was cheeky balanced with the usual excitement and suspense, and I love the resolute endings to such bizarre occurrences. Nancy always discovers the truth just in time, and this story is no different!

There’s a swindler of rare books, a copy-cat sculptor, a missing whispering statue, and even a secret identity wrapped up in this book. It may be under 200 pages, with additional illustrations, but it’s packed full of characters, conflicts, crises, and a nifty little conclusion. These make for great chapter books for youth because of the fun settings, positive themes, and many thrills.

“The Whispering Statue” also features popular characters like Bess and George, Ned, and more. It takes place at a seaside restore, and there are many exciting challenges like an almost-wrecked sailboat, attempted kidnapping, and a grumpy, perhaps even dangerous boss. I think many readers could enjoy the escapism, humor, light-heartedness, and wit that comes with these Carolyn Keene novels.

Book 63/150

The only remotely special thing about this book is that Nancy almost goes by the alias Carrie Fisher, long before Star Wars came out.

Nancy Drew and friends take a case involving theft and a mysterious marble statue. Bess, George, and Nancy head to a Yacht Club to work on the fraud mystery against Mrs. Merriam, a kind woman who, unfortunately, has been swindled out of a great deal of money. In this Nancy Drew book, Nancy goes undercover as Debbie Lynnbrook, a clever alias, to determine who defrauded Mrs. Merriam. As Debbie, Nancy works in an antiquarian bookshop specializing in books and figurines. As in most Nancy Drews, there are daring escapes and danger. There were also a few hiccups along the way as this Nancy Drew had a lot going on, and at least one illustration didn't capture Nancy in disguise. Overall, I did enjoy and will continue to read the series.

Ah, sweet nostalgia. I spent many happy hours with Nancy and her chums George and Bess when I was younger. This particular book is special to me because I have a copy from my grandmother which she inscribed with her name and the date she received it as a gift: March 18, 1943.

This is pretty standard Nancy Drew fare. Unlike the books published when I was young, George and Bess don't really have unique personalities and just fulfill the function of bosom buddies. Nancy is as much a Mary Sue as ever, but, c'mon. She's Nancy Drew. Of course she's talented, beautiful, kind, and brilliant. She is pretty much the mold for all of the girl geniuses of the future. In this volume we also meet Togo, Nancy's scampish little dog, for the first time.

Best Quote:
"You meant well, Nancy, but this time I'm afraid that in your great zeal to solve mysteries you have overstepped yourself."
