Certainly I couldn't be capable of such ruthless lucidity, at the most critical moments I knew how to hide from myself.

soooo good. you can’t escape blood ! there is no choice but to grow up !
this book captures puberty incredibly well: going through disillusionment regarding one’s parents, the body as it changes and begins to feel like an offering, hating what it does to you, hating what it doesn’t do to you, the grief, the homoerotic friendships, MEN, the inability to name it all ??? it’s such a difficult thing to process: to know you’re changing, to witness it and to know everyone is witnessing it as well and to be unable to do anything about it. it’s terrifying
of course, there’s also class, which is at the center of everything even when it doesn’t seem to be. elena ferrante shows us with unwavering clarity how the city is split in half and exactly where that division is, deep and low. she then proceeds to make her characters transgress the line and gets us looking at how the others respond to it, how betrayed they are, how angry
i can’t really put into words why ferrante’s writing gets under my skin in the way it does,,,, it just does ?? she writes so honestly about things, it makes me trust her unwaveringly. i open her books and i close my eyes. what can i say, she has my devotion !
