I don’t even know how I feel about this. Maybe time will reveal more but I suspect it just wasn’t for me. I loved all
the detail accorded to the bracelet, it felt so real that something so small can be such a prominent symbol for an adolescent. Otherwise, I found Giovanna’s actions lacking something (sense, maybe? Or maybe not)? I thought the idea of Vittoria was interesting but played out in a way that didn’t resonate with me as much. High stars because it’s Ferrante and beautifully written, but nowhere close to Brilliant Friend (which is to be expected).

Oh, Giovanna—I just wanted to lunge into the text and give her a big hug. Ferrante is a master of describing the interior lives of woman suffering and alienated in a patriarchal world. (As well as divinely deranged woman like Vittoria.)

I can’t express how much I love Elena Ferrante’s style - the neopolitan novels are my favourite read in recent years - her ability to immerse the reader in a completely foreign world and get inside the mind of an adolescent girl is second to none. I found this book, essentially about growing up in a dysfunctional family with very complicated dynamics, completely gripping almost until the end but found the last few pages baffling and disappointing, which is why i have rated it 4 instead of 5 stars.

I haven’t been 16 for years but I was 16 again for every minute reading this book.
