This was something different for me, and I really enjoyed that. I particularly like the author’s way of writing; it was very cinematic and, on that same note, I think this story could be used to make a good indie film. I liked that the book sucked you in to the world that the character’s lived in. The world being a small, Edwardian prep school on the rainy west coast, that is. This book is a reminder of sorts for that strange place a lot of us find ourselves in during our adolescence; when everything matters, when we feel so much, when we are old enough to hold our own beliefs and too young to grasp true consequence. I’ve seen a lot of other people mentioned how sappy the story is, and it is, but by way of telling a story and relaying a message. This book reads quickly, but it isn’t rushed, so if you’ve got a hunger for a good old atmospheric story, I would suggest picking this one up some time.

i have conflicted thoughts.. what I will say is this:

the author wrote that it took almost a decade to write this book. but when you read it, it feels like it was written in five days.

She yearns for nothing more than a “shipwreck of the soul,” Samuel Webster, he wrote the novel Laura loves.

A mixture of fun, dark, cultishly cliquey girls, and feelings every adolescent shelters themself beneath. This book will take you to places you haven’t felt in a long time, if ever. The vibes are marketed towards sapphic dark academia and hearing those words I come running! While I think this was a little underplayed in the grand scheme of things, there was still enough for me to leave it satisfied. The ending while tough to live through, took a dark and unceremonious turn. There’s the main character is I found myself enjoying her way of thinking and how she describes the atmosphere around herself. She’s poetic, naive, looking at the world through giant wondrous doe eyes almost. And as we saw this happens to be her downfall when coming into contact with these girls and the world around them. Very intense and I think anyone looking for something artistic yet literary would enjoy this!

Thank you Simon Buddy for my gifted copy!

religious and gay. magnificat in a is good but wood’s magnificat in f major is just superior for me personally. 3.5/5

I liked where this one went, the ending was shocking and satisfying, but damn did it take a really long repetitive time to get there. If the author got paid by the "sclerotic modern world," she would be able to buy a nice cabin on a lake in like Northern Wisconsin.
