A much more sober read than any of the other Jane Austen's I've devoured so far this year so it's perhaps less fun. However, I can identify with the character of Anne much better than any of Austen's sparkling and witty heroines. Anne is studious, reliable, and pensive. She lets someone she respects talk her out of something she wants (marriage with her love). She is just SO RESPONSIBLE. I was just reading and bobbing my head like, yep, I too am never rash, it will work out for you Anne. You are in a romance novel.

No one warned me that this book has one of the best love letters written. Though Austen’s work takes me longer to read, it isn’t a mark against my enjoyment. I loved following Anne—who often has better character than I do—as she navigates social life, her own desires, and the opinions of others. I laughed out loud, especially at the ridiculousness of her sister Mary, and I gasped audibly at reveals.
I’d even recommend this as a better starting point than Pride and Prejudice for new Austen readers as its much shorter but still brims with her witty dialogue, relatable characters, and romantic quotes.

It is pure Austen - it's lovely and joyous with a guaranteed HEA. All the things I appreciated in this novel were her hallmarks: mature intelligent main character who is determined to find happiness in her own term, dry humour arising from relatives who are only interested in gossip and "proper" relations etc. If you like [b:Pride and Prejudice|1885|Pride and Prejudice|Jane Austen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320399351l/1885._SY75_.jpg|3060926] you're bound to enjoy the similar style of writing and humor.
It's not my favourite though - I did feel the pacing dragged on a bit especially in the middle, with numerous characters and their relatives, both by blood and marriage, and rumours and plans. I never got a proper sense of character of Captain Wentworth - what was it that made him so lovely? And I thought it was strange that Austen had recycled not one but two character names from Pride and Prejudice, though personalities themselves were nothing like their namesakes.
