Thus was a really quick read. There were some twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing. But, the book lacked the atmosphere and grittiness and flawed characters of the Harry Hole novels.

wow. one of the best books I've ever read and I hadn't a clue what to expect. Loved the character. now I have to read his other stuff.

I’m a sucker for Nordic noir. And I liked the snowman as a bad taco read but this was just bad. It was super short and I almost couldn’t get through it

Dark as usual.

This was a fast and interesting read. Olav is a complicated character and, unlike other characters in his vein, he is not borderline superhuman. He isn't a genius, or extremely well-read, or exceedingly charming. He seems much more like the reports of "normal" hitmen, making the story more realistic. Despite the realism, the unreliability of the narrator really adds to the story, as does the alternate ending.

As simplistically as possible: this is a Christmas story told as only Jo Nesbo could tell it!

I think this was meant to be a story about a man the world would call "bad" finding love and accepting himself. However, the main character is a hit man who doesn't really find love but obsessions. I appreciated the thought that went into explaining how a not completely rotten person could end up a hit man, but it didn't quite work. The book had an odd sort of optimistic charm though and had a nice rhythm and pacing
