Maddie drive me nuts. There was a clear choice the whole time and she almost didn't pick it. Way too drawn out.

3.75 Stars. This is not your fluffy romance book. This tugs on your heartstrings and can get pretty deep in some of its themes. I really enjoyed Greenberg’s writing, although there were some points where the metaphors and flowery language got a little too out of hand. As for the story, one of the MMC’s is too perfect to even be believable and then the other MMC kind of sucks, so I don’t know what took the FMC so long to choose – c’mon girl, the choice is obvious. It shouldn’t have taken 300+ pages to figure it out (although the FMC kind of sucks too, so maybe that’s why it took so long). Speaking of, justice for Cecily, she didn’t deserve that shit. Lastly, and this is a me problem, but I don’t care for song lyrics in books, and there were so dang many in this.

First, this book is written like poetry but in the form of a romance novel. The song writing element had me itching to listen to the fictional songs being crafted. Honestly, the writing alone is why I gave this book five stars. I want to just pluck so many lines out and leave them on my heart forever.

The story and characters were surprisingly wonderful as well. The story is raw and hard in some ways, but also so incredibly unrealistic in others and while I didn’t really connect with Maggie’s life or experiences, I connected with the way she sees the world. I loved the way the story took on a lot of heavy and real topics (divorce, suicide, infertility, sexual assault, mental health) in a beautiful and candid way. There’s a sort of sad tone throughout the whole book, yet it’s ultimately a romance. Although, it’s also a book about a woman learning who she is and how she fits in the world at the same time.

I don’t think this book is for everyone, and I went back and forth between if I loved it or hated it, but ultimately I think it just really hit a chord for me today.
