Amazing book. Also, very graphic, but not needlessly.

dazed and confused

I honestly don't know what kind of a review I should write about this novel, because I don't even know if I liked it or not. That makes me seem like a weirdo, I know, but this was such a strange reading experience, I can't tell if I enjoyed it or not.

Two things I do know:
- the author's use of the English language is very unconventional and dense, which made it hard for me to read or even understand some parts, since English isn't my maternal language.
- the constant "jumping to" different moments in the protagonists' lives was very annoying and confusing.

Despite these downsides, I found myself strangely attracted to the story and I never considered abandoning the book. Maybe it's due to the very dark, gruesome and ugly stuff that happens all through the book (the accident, the fires, the plastic surgery,...). It's certainly not for the faint-hearted, but the dark side of me likes this kind of thing.
I certainly was a fascinating read for me, but is it a good novel too? I honestly don't know. Find out for yourself, but be warned.

I really enjoyed this book. All the characters were very interesting - I loved the way they all had connections the reader is at first unaware of, and then are revealed. The examination of beauty and its worth to different individuals was very good, and Palahniuk’s writing style is very absorbing. It feels so suited to the plot and a style that I haven’t really seen before (books I have read in the past have had similar feels, but nothing was quite like this). The only thing I found strange was actually in the reviews: people claiming this book was so shocking and twisty. For me, it felt as though almost every twist was teased at before hand, and it reading it when Palahniuk decided to fully reveal it felt more like a memory than a revelation. However, this isn’t a detriment - if anything, this makes me love the book more because it seems to me that this type of plot weaving requires much more skill than simply relying on shock value.

*3.5

this was weird but i liked the ending

Seemed like a desperate attempt to be edgy.

It was certainly enjoyable but it tried to hard to be funny and it just....wasn't but it was touching :)

i first read this book about six years ago and i decided recently that i should revisit this story and i’m so glad i did. this was undeniably a wild ride from beginning to end although i already once knew what happened it was like reading it for the first time with how long it’s been. it was even oddly comforting in some aspects. i love this book. i love that it was never what i expected.

This book, this is what I needed. I was desperate, after many lackluster novels, for something spectacular. 'Invisible Monsters' delivered on all fronts. Chuck Palahniuk, you are a God among men. The Messiah of the literary world. Thank you for this book. Thank you, for it tore me from the rut of less-than-average books of my recent past, and catapulted me head-first into a shiny new future of novel grooviness.

Huh. That was a wild ride from start to finish.

Umm wow, I don't even know what to say. I can say that Chuck Palahniuk has a very twisted mind, that's for sure. The book jumps back and forth in time throughout the whole thing and it really is a book where you are piecing everything together and there are times when certain pieces really surprise you. I really can't say anything else without ruining the experience. Just read and hold on because it's a hell of a ride!
