Give me an unconventional plot. Flash. Give me non-linear storytelling. Flash. Give me nihilistic terror. Flash. Give me humanity's dark and nasty bits. Flash. This novel focuses on beauty: its value, what it means, how it can be fabulous, and how it can be terror. Not only to the characters suffer in the name of beauty, but they suffer for the perceived beauty obtained. As always Palahnuik forces you to confront uncomfortable topics that reveal the nihilistic characters that plausibly live in the world around us. The perfect quote from/for this novel: "When we don't know who to hate, we hate ourselves." As if this book wasn't enough, now I want to read Invisible Monsters Remix!
The first Palahniuk book I ever read. So crazy, but still one of my favorite books ever.
This book is a good but difficult read, it's beyond bizarre!

What a freaking bizarre book. Good lord I feel like I need to go to church now.
As usual, Chuck Palahniuk delivers a captivating novel with exciting twists and profound revelations. I really enjoyed Invisible Monsters overall, but there were some parts throughout that were too stagnant and didn't necessarily move the plot forward or provide new insight into the characters. 4/5.
Interesting! That could be a snarky description, but it just fits. The main character is an ex-model who, due to a shooting, now is missing most of her face. But she picks up a couple of strange traveling companions--her ex, who comes along partly against his will, and Brandy Alexander, who is in the middle of her own transformation via sexual reassignment.
People are not what they seem, our narrator has discovered. And yet she's only going to discover that those people who weren't what they seemed are even less what they seemed. And the people who were what they seemed...aren't what they seem either. The narrative loops back on itself in interesting ways, which fits in with the conclusions our narrator draws from her story.
