This took me a lot longer to read then I had hoped, reading this book story by story was a lot more enjoyable then reading it like a Novel. I think this is grate for a reference book and I will definitely be picking it up on occasion but I won’t be reading it cover to cover again.

This book is well written and well organised for Greek and Roman myths it has a lot of information. However sometimes I found sections brushed over as Hamilton wasn’t shy about shoving aside myths she felt less important, In the same vein Hamilton often showed the version of the myth she preferred as though it was how the myth went instead of one version of the tale. While I enjoyed Hamilton’s retelling of the myths I wasn’t a fan of her commentary and got over her slamming Ovid all the time.

I also don’t understand the point of the 20 or so pages of norse myths shoved into the end, it was a good over view but added nothing to the book and snubbed the Norse myths and people of the time.

Overall it was a good overview of Greek and Roman mythology and will be a good reference book.

Edith Hamilton's textbook of Mythology is most definitely a worthwhile read for classics lovers (me). I appreciate Hamilton's transparency in the fact that her retellings change tone based on which author/poet she was using as a source. In that way, retellings that were based on one author were factual and to the point while others utilized a lot of flowery language. It was interesting to see the stories through her lens, but also through the lens of the original author and how they chose to tell the story.
On top of that, it was obvious when Hamilton was interjecting in the story to add her own thoughts. While her interjections were minimal, it was entertaining nonetheless and added depth and thought to the stories.

A good introduction to greek mythology. Moral of the story: don’t offend the gods.

I absolutely loved this mythology collection and the illustrations in it was beautiful.

A wonderful read and resource. Summaries of all the Greco-Roman myths told in a very readable fashion drawing in multiple sources to tell the most complete version of the myth possible.

It was so BORING. I wanted to learn more about Greek mythology and review my old knowledge but I just couldn't keep slogging through it.

Paperback |

I knew barely anything of Greek mythology and was surprised to remain mostly interested in the stories. The book remained quite good… until the last chapter, on Norse Mythology, the book then became great. I was thoroughly moved by the Nordic Mythology and cannot wait to learn more.

I would never have read this book if it were not lent to me a few years ago and I am so glad I did.

Enjoyed it, very good introduction to Greek mythology.
funny informative medium-paced

Took me a long time to focus long enough to get through this audiobook. It came in handy over the last couple of days, though.

This was quite the undertaking to get through but it's a super comprehensive book on all Greek mythology as well as a touch of Norse mythology at the end. It was interesting to read through all of the stories in their original summarized versions as I've read so many retellings its hard to know what was from source material and what was the authors add. A nice book for my shelf should I ever want to revisit any in the future
