I love mythology, so I was psyched when our English teacher said this book was going to be a part of our curriculum during senior year. I wish I still had my copy. Sadly, I left it in a box back in my home country.
I found this book shortly after finishing Song of Achilles, a book that made me realize I know nothing about Greek mythology, let alone Roman or Norse. This book is like an encyclopedia of knowledge. no I've never opened an encyclopedia. The moral here is this book does its intended job well, and Hamilton clearly knows her stuff. Though by the end I was mostly just traumatized by all of incest in these stories
The original paperback edition was already amazing but it pushed the stories to their limits with the additional illustrations. Definitely worth the time to read again.
It was pretty good, considering we had to read it for school. There were just a whole bunch of characters, so at some points is was a little hard to keep track of.
It is not Edith Hamilton’s fault that some of the myths are more interesting than others.
This book offers a nice overview of Greek mythology. All of the major stories, and many of the minors, are included here. I would have liked to see more of the myths from other cultures, but it is understandable that they are not included, given the fact that the work was done in the 1950's. A worthwhile introduction to myths.
