Probably 3.5 stars. I don't understand what redeeming qualities Andrew has - no job, miserable, hanging out at an orgy fest, getting swindled out of money...I liked the rest of the characters and the general storyline, but it seemed to end too tidily to be realistic.
This was a really nice and interesting story! I felt like the characters weren't typical and had interesting stories. I love the backstory of them being in a band and now they are all adults with kids. Recommended as a simple read with an interesting storyline.
Incredibly well-written with dynamic characters. The plot was a little slow & the pacing felt slightly off - but other than that - a great read.
3.5 stars. A good summer read, but that's about it. None of the characters particularly moved me, nor did the plot blow me away, yet I still found it enjoyable and engaging.
Well, Straub sure does like writing about affluent, privileged people. The upside is that her words remains breezy, and character's problems, while stressful, will never wrench a reader's gut. The downside is that resolutions can be seen from the beginning of the book. I enjoyed The Vacationers more, and would recommend this as a summer read.
I thought I would enjoy this novel much more than I actually did. The characters were intriguing up to a point, but there wasn't much to find below the surface of the first impressions Straub creates. The "secrets" brought to light made the characters somehow less complex. It was mostly uncomfortable to read, (without respite); especially the Andrew/Elizabeth relationship.
That being said, the New York setting Straub creates in her novel is well crafted. The slight mystery and relationship tensions kept me reading to the end, although most of its storylines ended predictably.

Not my favorite - was disappointed because I have enjoyed Straub’s other books. For whatever reason this felt like swimming through mud.
