Meh. Hard to care about most of the characters, though u did enjoy the writing itself.
So disappointingly average. Characters were not particularly likable and the plot really didn't advance until the very end. The epilogue is really where the story should have started. I really enjoyed Straub's VACATIONERS, but wish I could get my $20 back on this one.
Good, really liked the story and the characters. Struggled a few times to keep interested
I think Straub's premise of middle-aged friends coming to terms with their status is interesting, and I even liked some of the characters. That being said, I thought the characters needed more development and more to do. This book is not plot-heavy, which is fine. However, I didn't think there was a deep enough exploration of character or theme to drive the book. Emma Straub has a good writing style, and she could have had a wonderful book if she had dug a little deeper. In the end, I think this book was "fine," but I don't think readers would miss out on much were they to skip it.
I had been on the library digital loan waitlist forever and when this book finally came in last week I didn't really think I felt like reading it. I gave a couple pages a try and found reading about nothing more than rich people angst kind of compelling. They weren't particularly good or bad people or incredibly amazing and full of depth but that was alright. It was a distraction from life and news and that was nice.
I loved this book. Straub does a lovely job intertwining six narratives and their intersections. Each character has a rich story and distinct voice.
The reader of this audiobook was the best I’ve heard in fiction. She wend from teenage boy to uptight mom to vapid actress and her choices/performances were perfect. Better than I would have heard in my head. Highly recommend.

Addicting. What a fun read about a very modern family and their conflicts.
3.5 stars
I’ve been reading too much nonfiction/challenging stuff lately, and wanted something effortlessly readable. This book was exactly what I wanted: an easy-to-follow narrative of a couple families and their (mostly believable) drama. I really enjoyed the fact that the story was set in Ditmas Park, an area I’m very familiar with in Brooklyn (I lived 20 mins’ walking distance from it for 3 years), so I could really visualize all of the fairly specific locations mentioned.
I liked the characters well enough, but found each one to be just a liiittle under-developed. I kind of wish Straub had limited her focus to one or two main characters, rather than allowing us to get inside the heads of five.
