LOVED IT!

Despite being interested in the series and eager to read more, I was reluctant to start this one because honestly, I found naga to be kind of boring. Like vampires or werewolves, it just was kind of meh. I'm pleased to say this book may have converted me a little. I'm definitely feeling more open minded to how cool or interesting a naga could be as a character and much more willing to consider more naga stories in the future.

For this book specifically, Szaro and Serena were grand. This was an adventure from start to finish and I loved the way the Ordosian culture and life on Trangor was explored, shared, and valued throughout the book. Love that Serena is an independent, 6'1" woman of color kicking ass but very respectful of the balance of nature as well. Szaro could be described in a similar way and he was so, so patient with Serena adjusting to their differences and wanting what was best for her.

Here's a quote from Szaro that really sums up his whole attitude towards their relationship and Serena's autonomy. It's very, very late in the book but spoiler free:
“I want you to do what feels right for yourself,” he said firmly. “Whatever choice you make, I will support you. Your decision must not be made because you feel pressured by some arbitrary deadline or feel like your body is taking that decision away from you.”

Last but not least, here's another quote I really enjoyed that summed up the great Ordosian approach to hunting and protection of wildlife.
Even if they claimed it was to provide therapeutics for their people, nothing justified the senseless killing of one non-threatening species for the exclusive benefit of another.

I could easily read a series set on Trangor alone. Maybe Regine Abel will consider something like that someday? In the mean time, I'm in awe of her ability to weave these really cool sociocultural dilemmas and traditions with these unexpected romances and am eagerly moving on to the next book in the series.
