I don't usually read this genre but I enjoyed it for the most part. I am more interested in learning more about the real Mary Bolen and her family now.

In The Other Boleyn Girl Phillpa Gregory has created a wonderful piece of historical fiction set in the Tudor era. The tale is rooted by her background knowledge and research, but is made into a spellbinding read by her creative talent. She has skillfully woven together a fascinating account of the court and its personalities during the middle of the reign of King Henry VIII.

In our time it is mind boggling to imagine a young attractive woman from a powerful family such as the Howards being driven by the ambition of her family to the extent that Mary and Anne were, sacrificing marriage, virginity, and sense of self in quest to become the queen of England. In their uncle and parent’s thirst for power they served only as pawns.

Doubtless, Mary Boleyn is a little known figure who could offer a unique perspective on the person of King Henry the VIII. She may be one of only two women who truly cared about him, the other being his first wife, Katherine of Aragon. Gregory brings her to life and offers a believable and likeable portrayal of her character.

I appreciated the vivid depiction of the Boleyn siblings. Mary’s viewpoint is perfect for the telling of this chain of events. I gave this book ***** because I truly enjoyed it. I will definitely be picking up one of Gregory’s other books to read sometime soon.

Gorgeous!

Beautifully told from an emotional perspective not of the politics but of the lack of power of a woman. Absolutely gorgeous!

My mother-in-law made me read this. She and I don't normally see eye-to-eye on books (see: the one and only Danielle Steel book on my list; The Davinci Code) but this was actually an excellent book. Compelling characters, a plot that keeps you reading even though you know the end. Tried reading her other stuff but it was pretty bad.

I loved this book! I couldn't put it down and it made me research more literature and historical fiction about this family.

Great book, as told from the viewpoint of Mary Boelyn. It's a great historically base story (if not 100% accurate). She really does a great job describing courtly life and all of the pitfalls of being one of the kings favorites.
