Really entertaining and disturbing look at the "royal" life. Would definitely read another one of her books.
This is just a fun little historical fiction. If you are looking for historical accuracy, Philippa Gregory isn't necessarily the one to read. However, there is still a lot for us to love (especially if, like me, you have a slightly unnatural interest in Tudor England). The characters are strong and well written, and the story moves. I get tired of reading so much detail about sex, however. Gregory doesn't hold back on that. It's rare to find good historical fiction that also doesn't make me blush a bit. Oh, and the book is WAY better than the movie.
One of the longer books that my reading group has picked, it was fast moving and hard to put down. It is very easy to feel for the characters and I was often trying to read quickly to find out what would happen next.
Good golly. What a soap opera this one is! And not necessarily in a bad way: once I decided to let myself care about the characters and ignore my "I-Should-Read-Something-More-Meaningful" thoughts, I found this an obsessively engaging book. And hey, at least I know a little more history for it.
I literally could not put this book down. Completely addictive both as a guilty pleasure and a loose interpretation of a history lesson. This is by far her best book.
after i finally finished up the harry potter saga i needed a quick page-turner. let's see how it goes...
kinda liked this book! i'm so excited that eric bana's going to be henry viii in the movie. YUUUUUUMMMMMM!!!! i think i have a new crush!

Good beach read. Kind of smutty but based in historical fact so you don't feel so guilty about reading it.
I'll preface this by saying I'm not a huge historical fiction fan. In addition, I've been hearing about Phillipa Gregory for years, so maybe there's also a hype factor at play here. Either way, I was disappointed.
This book was extremely long and a bit of a yawn-fest. Some exciting things do happen, there are some cool political intrigues and feints, but it's all bogged down by inane details about what everyone's wearing, how much Mary adores Catherine, how much she hates her sister, etc, etc. Secondly, I just found Mary to be horribly inconsistent as a character. None of her motivations really made sense to me. At times Gregory portrays her as this perfectly innocent girl and other times as secretly cunning and devious - very confusing.

This was the first historical fiction book I ever read. I loved it and I now love historical fiction as a genre
