Wish I could do separate reviews for the first and second half of this book, the first half was slow, the characters did not draw me in,  the plot felt drawn out - I would have dnf'd several times over if I had not seen the movie years ago and known there was a big twist.
The second half of the book was fantastic- worth the drudgery of the first half - the characters were more compelling, and the plot greatly sped up

This book is not my cup of tea. I have realised that a book like this can only be digested as a movie ( at best), at least for me. I wish I could say that I enjoyed reading this book, like the raving reviews it got, but 50 pages in, and I was reading it to scratch the itch. I would rather spend my time reading something informative or maybe a book I liked as a child. I know the whole point of this book was to anger the reader, loathe the characters, and pity them. But after a while, the characters were too much to digest. I don't want to read a psycho-analysis of sociopaths.

Very much a AAH situation.

I was interested enough to want to find out what happened, but goodness it felt long winded. For me that padding also undercut the impressiveness of the “cleverness”.

I suspect the reveal in Part 2 was meant to be a surprise twist, but wasn’t for me.

Also, didn’t help that the closest to “likeable” was a couple of the side characters, and even then it was a struggle.

If it weren’t a book club read, I doubt I’d have persevered. Certainly, I didn’t feel the ending provided sufficient payoff to make the longwindedness worthwhile.
