The best vampire story ever put to paper. Wonderful world building with unique characters. Spy/horror/thriller over, at last count, 14 books and numerous short stories.  "Tare down the mountains!"

The dialogue is cringy and bad, the writing is basic at best, the story started slow and boring, had some good ideas and by the end it felt like Lumley was on lsd while writing, over the top and ridiculous in a bad way, one dimensional characters, op main character for no reason, its like a shonen in a book, yikes

This is one of the few books I've read where I've had an audible reaction to a scene, the other being 1984. Out of all the horror books I've read, this one was by far my favorite. I've been meaning to read the rest of the books in this series, and I can imagine that I won't find them as thrilling as I did when I was a teen, but this is definitely worth a read if you're into the genre.

Kinda like if skibidi toilet had cold war vampires and shit. Unfortunately it has that "the west good and USSR bad and I won't question it" vibe which brings down just a little for me. A few really cool horror moments that I wish there were more of. When it gets scary, it does a really good job, but it fails to hold on to that scariness for long.
