Still a good read from childhood. Best merging of Spy novel, vampirism, and ESPer paranormal genres into a single novel. Just have to try and remember the novels that were available at the time, and this one stands out as unique. It's worth reading just to get to the sequel too.

More like 4.5 stars, just because the ending made me quite happy. Still, it would have been a little easier to read if there hadn't been so much of the villain's perspective. (Although perhaps that made the ending that much more satisfying for me?) This book had lots of really interesting ideas, though, from the necroscope himself, to parasitic vampires, to the thoughts of the dead. I really liked it a lot.

It was splendid. Better than I thought it would be as I read it long ago when I was quite young. It really holds up: the suspense, the sense of the "mind of the monster," The paranormal hero who is far from perfect. Just the ticket!

Cold War spy thriller vibe involving vampires, necromancers, ghosts, and other supernatural elements. Fits wonderfully into a tight niche

The mechanics of the book is quiet interesting on the fact that many people claim to talk to the dead and here are two guy who can communicate with the dead; even if one has to rape the secrets from the lifeless bodies.

I'll admit the whole Mobius continuum through me for a loop and after it was explained it made sense and is the perfect excuse for the next book in the series which I will read.

Hopefully it wont take me as long to read it as this one did.

One of those books that for a long time always popped up anytime I entered a second hand bookstore. Immensely popular, I know a lot of friends who had told me I needed to read this and finally I did.

It is a really fascinating mix of vampirism and ESP but also a spy thriller with global as well as personal and private conflicts. I'll definitely continue with the series even though Lumley seems to have been inspired by Stephen King in that he never seems to bother writing one excellent page when he feels he can equally churn out another five more average ones as well.

Still, a fascinating melange of various genres and a great example of fictional world building.

DID NOT FINISH: 26%

Didn’t connect with any of the details being given. The opening was a great hook but it then veered in a direction I didn’t care about and couldn’t get into

Harry can speak to the dead. Dragosani can pull the last secrets from corpses. Their respective talents have set them on a collision course that will shake the foundations of heaven!

This is the best kind of pulp there is: completely and utterly ridiculous fun, with just enough realism to keep the reader hooked. I jokingly described it to my brother as "The X-men go to Hogwarts" and it's not far off the mark; Necroscope is nothing less than a sci-fi horror fantasy time travel mystery wrapped inside a cold war thriller. All the best parts of 80's pulp follow along as well: gratuitousness in every aspect.

Detailed and interesting characters (except, perhaps, for Harry, as he is generally one note for most of the book) flesh out this world of monsters, witches, ghouls, zombies, and psychics. A whirlwind read top to bottom; better hope the edge of your seat is comfortable.
