This is a curious little novel that involves spiritualism. relationships, and a court case. I’m not enjoying it as much as her other books, but it has its moments.

liked if bitter. hard to follow all the characters, and such a sad, sad world.

I enjoy Muriel Spark's books, but this was not one of my favourites, as the characters were fussy - I suppose because they are bachelors and set in their ways. However, it had the hallmarks of Spark's comedy.

Could realistically be more like a 3.5
Spark's wit is in lovely form here, and there are charming moments in this whirly-gig of bachelors being bachelors in London. But her attention seems diffuse here, and the sharpness with which she peppers books like THE BALLAD OF PECKHAM RYE and LOITERING WITH INTENT is dulled because of it. Still plenty to enjoy, but her best work is elsewhere.

A side of bachelours brought out very interestingly by Muriel, all centered around silently sinister scary Seton.
