Catchy, with a surprising last part. If you like strategics this is for you. Don't watch the (bad bad) movie. 3½ stars.

Loved the concept but disliked the execution of it. I'm sorry.
Got to love 80's sci-fi. Definitely got better as it went on - I was worried it would become another story where nothing bad ever happens and the protagonist is the most awesome person ever. Not so here, and as a result I found the story pretty enjoyable. I saw the surprise near the end coming, but it was a pleasant discovery. I'd recommend this read!
Oh, and if you haven't read it and your copy has the GIGANTIC introduction by the author at the beginning, please just skip it. The guy can write, but my god is he ever in love with himself.

Card insists that most women cannot be soldiers in his world, because of the “too many centuries of evolution” working against them.
I had to finish this book because I'd like to see the movie. I saw the same flaws that those who hated the book did, but I don't hate it. It was okay. I am pretty disappointed in Card, though. He writes a lot of books on writing, and based on the advice he gives, I thought he'd be a better writer.
Why I didn't LOVE it is this:
1. The book is extremely repetitive. From the Battle School games to the simulator on Eros, the entire book was a repeat of this or that. It got dull, but I trudged on anyway.
2. Except for Mazer, who only wished to prove a point instead of hurt him, Ender always won. He was too smart. He was more-or-less a prophecy child. I'd hate to say this. The people who know the word might object, but I believe Ender is a Sue. He has no flaws. In fact, he's pretty flat as a character. The only thing that gives Ender any dimension at all is 1. His fear and hatred of Peter. 2. His love of Valentine. 3. That he doesn't want to hurt people or be manipulated (but does anyway).
3. The ending was very anticlimactic. I kinda liked the last chapter, but the battle with the Buggers? Ugh...I swear I blinked at the page and wanted to shout, "Really!?"
As for the Demosthenes and Locke chapters...kinda pointless.
I'm kinda curious about the rest of the series. Where could it go? But I probably won't read it. I think the movie will be good, and hopefully will give more dimension to the characters, but I don't think I'll read anymore Ender.

I was kind of disappointed. This book is so greatly touted but I found it dragged on. I loved the ending, in that it was a surprise yet, several chapters up to it I had suspected as much and was rewarded with confirmation. The ending made me interested in reading the subsequent book to see where the story heads.
