I’ve waited a long time to read this book and it did NOT disappoint. Never saw the plot twists coming. Ender could reinvent the wheel to be more efficient and meanwhile I still make every journey twenty minutes longer than it needs to be from my inability to follow Google Maps.
Loved it. I was told to skip the second book and go straight to the third...
My mind has been blown. I can see why Sister Soper said its easy to hate this book but have a burning desire to read it. I hated the book, but loved it at the same time. The ideas are just genius and the book is well written. I decided that this book deserved 5 stars. The way that these children are treated is unbelievable, like they are disposable. This book has the view "sacrifice at any cost." The ending was amazing and I wasn't expecting it in the least, and I found myself trying to figure out what just happened. Orson Scott Card has a twisted but brilliant mind.
Violence: 4- There are some scenes when Ender takes out a few kids and they are a bit graphic. He also has some very vivid ideas about bodily functions being spilled everywhere. It is a bit gruesome at times.
Sex: 1- I don't believe there is any sex in the book.
Drugs/Alcohol: 1- No drugs either
Language: 2- Ok, there was a bit of minor swearing and a whole lot of different ways to use the word "fart" in name calling. For example, Fart sniffer, Fart eater, Fart lover, etc. You get the idea, but these are also ten year old boys so what can you expect?

It is actually quite hard for me to put my opinion of this book into words. The simple version is: I love it. However, I can’t seem to pin down why I love it. I think it’s because I don’t just love a few parts or aspects of the novel, but rather I like everything about it and how it all comes together.
I love the Command School, the Battle Room, the simulator, the futuristic world, the psychology, the characters and the sub-plot (see what I mean?). Orson Scott Card’s vision of the future is very intriguing and the character of Ender is very sympathetic and easy to connect with.
I think my favorite parts of the story are the times that Ender plays, or dreams about, the Fantasy Game. It just sends chills down my spine every time I think about it. Also, I won’t spoil the ending, but it really is amazing.

It’s fascinating to me that the forward was a rather pretentious message about how he wanted the book to be very enjoyable on a surface level while still maintaining deeper meanings for those that want to dive into the text, and then he wrote…that. There are enjoyable elements throughout, but there are also moments of bad characterization, bad writing, and bad plot development. His regressive social views shone through in, frankly, unflattering ways that did the story no favors. When he did hit on something interesting he’d often shy away from really interrogating it. While there were a lot of elements — specifically sci-fi ones — that I was interested in, I can’t say I really liked this book.
This book has done just fine without my recommendation and it’ll continue to do so.
