Satisfying to re read from my childhood and will finish the series I think. Fun adventurous funny and violent while also philosophizing just the right way and amount for a sci-fi

Decent book - but just an absolute slogfest to get through. Maybe I’m just a victim of in your face sci-fi and fantasy overstating my neurons, and when I read this, it feels dry, depressing, and a bit anxiety inducing. Or maybe this actually is a book that was written in a way that isn’t “believable” (I know, it’s sci-fi) to where a bunch of kids flying around playing laser tag are going to become a child military and destroy BRUTAL ALIENS WE CANT COMMUNICATE WITH?! Yeah, just didn’t do it for me. At the end of the book it all becomes clear - the kids can only win because of their belief that they’re playing a game the whole time and actually killing the buggers. The reveal doesn’t do it for me. It would’ve been a way more interesting book if we knew the whole time that they were basically being trained on simulators/avatar style remote controlled warships. Idk. Maybe just not for me. But the whole time I was thinking to myself, “how is zero g laser tag training these kids when they’re expected to use real weapons within a couple of years?” Everything felt pointless because of that.

Card is one of the best author’s I’ve ever had the pleasure to write. He makes the characters so loveable, so complicated, so hateable. He writes in a way where out of concept ideas are written in a way that makes sense. I can picture it so clearly. The way the book ends, the way that Ender still feels like a child, even in the end, although he does have character development is so special and unique. I don’t know what else to say, because there’s too much to say and not enough words, and I can’t articulate it.

I enjoyed this read, but the author’s opinions on the LGBT community and women have unfortunately led to me giving a lower rating.

Classic sci-fi for a reason, but the authors a pedo and bigot so it’s tainted for me lmao. The “I Believe I Can Fly” of science fiction.
