Nutcracker

E.T.A. Hoffmann

I love the Nutcracker but this translation was pretty terrible, and very difficult to follow because of it. I couldn’t stop giggling about the chapter titled “Conclusion of the Tale of the Hard Nut” though.

The Nutcracker is such a magical yet vaguely sinister tale. It's so charming with the odd spot of creepy (and this creepy really comes out in the other two tales included in this volume: The Sandman, and The Mines at Falun). I'm so interested to see how this translates into a ballet with the different scenes of the book feeling like their own miniature fairy tales.
