By now, nearly everyone has seen the Nutcracker ballet. At least heard the music. This is the story behind the story; the novella that the ballet is based on.

It's weird. Think Alice in Wonderland weird. Beautifully strange twisting between reality and dreamland. The overlapping of a young girl's imagination and what may be fantastically true.

I'm not really sure what I make of it myself - I prefer more coherent literature - but my 9yo swears it's the best book she's read in months and has already reread it 3 times. Since the original target audience was children, I suppose it hits it's mark.

I read a different translation in a compilation book, but just wanted to say that this story is fantastic and deserves all the love it has gotten. It has that ~magic~ feeling that L. Frank Baum captured in Peter Pan.
