I just needed an easy read and this was actually hard to put down. I just love retellings and this being sapphic made it much more interesting.

some things you NEED TO KNOW before reading this book. most of the “sex scenes” are rape scenes, until the VERY LAST ONE. we see retrospectively no growth in the relationship between hades and persephone, just a time jump that explains things were “calm” during said time. i feel that dark romance is a genre with SO MUCH POTENTIAL for people to completely dissociate from reality and revel in something not quite typical but also not dangerous, or hurting anyone! i just don’t think this book is a good example of it. which truly does pain me to say, because lianyu tan is truly a talented writer. she holds the ability to transport you off page and right onto a movie in your head. it made me so upset that she chose to bring this particular story to life with this talent.

I did not have high expectations for this book, since the ratings were pretty low, but I was surprised to find that I enjoyed this story. Yes, the romance was very dark and sometimes disturbing, but there were also elements that I really liked about it. And the writing was so good and engaging, I could not put it down.
