Dr. Ava Lloyd works for the CDC, investigating outbreaks . Walter Rivers has been sent to be her bodyguard/protector. But the outbreak is more than it seems, it's also a domestic terrorism event. One with more than one agenda on the go. This book is not for those who do not enjoy a fast paced, action filled, tense thriller type of romantic suspense!

Rivers (no way will Walter ever fit this guy as a name!) ALPHA, bada$$, strong and silent type! He and Ava may have a fast and fiery attraction. Some may find it weird that there would be sexy times during a crisis but what other way than to feel alive and have something tangible to fight for?? It's not like the sex is all the time, in fact the first mild passionate clinch is almost at the halfway point!

There are ulterior motives, alternate agendas, red herrings galore. The plot is mighty tightly packed with action. I felt it read a bit like a movie. I am a science geek, with the degree to back it up, but not an academic go Google was a good reference tool for anything that got me lost.

Whoa--open up this book and hold on tight, because it'll take you on one heck of a ride!

Seriously, Viable Threat is pretty much a disaster movie in book form--non-stop action. And the back-and-forth between Ava and River really added to the action-movie feel--their relationship was a whole lot of fun.
"Any idiot can go through life without making enemies," River said cheerfully. "Congratulations. It takes character and intelligence to make people want to kill you."
Truer words were never spoken, unless you count these:
"Just because a girl has an ugly cry doesn't mean she isn't busy plotting to kill you. In fact, if you're the cause of the ugky cry, she probably is plotting to kill you."
Okay, so that last one wasn't actually directed at River, but at several points in the book, it certainly could have been!

I had so much fun reading this book--the characters, the non-stop action, the fact that I absolutely did not know who was behind it all until the characters figured it out--all good things. I can't wait to see what the next book in the series brings!

Sgt. Walter River is put in a situation that I hope none of us will ever have to experience. He makes no excuses for how he talks or acts. I would certainly want him there should something happen to me. In this current place in time, I can’t say for certain that something like this couldn’t happen. I find it interesting how this comes out, as there’s a lot of terrorist activity happening lately. Adds a sense of realism to the story.

Dr. Ava Lloyd is in a situation not of her choosing. She’s a woman who seems to be able to hold her own. She appears to be good at keeping her cool in a tough situation. Loved the banter between these two characters that feeds into the beginning of a relationship.

I loved how the author included the time in the story. It helps us feel as if we’re in that moment of time. It reminds me of some shows on TV that would post a clock on the screen as you watch the episode unfold. It also creates a timeline for the set of events that are going down.

It’s sad to think how violent our world has become. It’s even sadder how what can be a work of fiction one minute could become our reality next. The saying used to be “you just can’t make this stuff up”. I don’t think we can say that anymore. This is one thing that makes this author so great. Her story and characters seem so real. I was all in with the action and suspense. For me, the romance was secondary. The author also reminded me of what I loved about the Andromeda Strain. I always thought there should have been a romance in there.

This was a great way to start the series. It piqued my interest and left me wondering how the author was going to top this in the next book. Having strong women characters is something I’ve come to love in a story – it shows how far romances have come since I first started reading them. And we have a male character that is willing to change. I loved that the ending was happy but left with questions, which may be a setup for the next story. It also left me wanting to read the author’s Biological Response Team series.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

This is my first book by this author. I loved River and Ava. The story was fascinating. I found the romance and the case engaging. I read the book in one day. I just kept going back for more until I completed the book. River was such an interesting character. The way he treated Ava was so cool. You have to respect a guy who is attracted to the smart girl. Ava was a little damaged by the past. River kept surprising her. I will definitely read more in this series and by this author.

This book could have easily be a 5 on the me-scale, except that the romance goes from 0 to 60 way too fast, and then at the end of the book it goes right to 100. I'm sure that shit does happen in real life sometimes, but for me it was hard to suspend disbelief for that.

I received this advanced reader copy in exchange for a fair and honest review from Entangled Publishing via netgalley.

First of all, let's just appreciate the utter art that is this cover. I think I was drooling the first time I got a look at it.

This book was such a fresh breath of air for romance, it was filled to the brim with intelligent characters (including high ranking, fabulous women) and the plot was wrapped around a biotech terrorist attack that had me on my toes the entire time.

This followed Walter River, an army medic who is called into El Paso, Texas, where there was an unknown outbreak of a man-made pathogen, which was killing and infecting people rapidly. River is put in charge of protecting microbiologist, Ava Lloyd (and all round kickass)as she is tasked with finding the site of the outbreak.

Together they end up being ~*almost*~ blown up five times, held at gun point, shot at and kidnapped.

The two main characters had my heart within the first couple of chapters, their witty banter and strength made me oddly protective of the two. Together they continuously had me in stitches, their banter was hilarious but the way they interacted together was even better. This was a romance between two people who had an immense amount of respect for each other, River only ever supported Ava in her position of authority and never undermined her.

Unfortunately, the big mystery of who was behind the terrorist attack was never really a mystery to me. I picked out the mastermind before I even knew there was supposed to be a mastermind, just by how the character was set up to be over eager and a little shifty.

The description of everything was clear and beautiful, every little thing was painted perfectly in my head but I wasn’t overloaded with inane details that made the story drag. There was a lot of technical jargon, that honestly sometimes left me needing to kindle ‘definition’ the hell out of it, but most of the time it was explained in such a way that I could pick up the basic drift of what the words meant without needing an encyclopedia.

There were a few hilarious moments like when River just happened to have a condom on him, even though they were in the middle of fighting a terrorist who had set off a deadly pathogen with the death toll at roughly six-hundred? All I could hear when I was reading this part was River’s favourite saying—

“I’m a firm believer in plan for the worst, hope for the best. Proper preparation and attention to safety protocols can mitigate a lot of the danger.”

He was definitely prepared.

Honestly though my favourite character might have to be Drill Sargent “DS”, despite the fact he was only in the story for a short portion. He was bloody hilarious omg

“Shut your pie hole, all of you,” DS yelled. “If I have to come back there, you’ll all wish your mother had swallowed.”

The ending was absolutely adorable, and like usual, I wish I was able to read more about their lives after everything was resolved. I'm already sure this series will be an absolute favourite of mine, I can't wait until the next book is out! (literally crying bc this isn't even published yet omg the wait might kill me lmao)

HEA :
YES, YES and YAS!

To-be published on the 22nd of May, 2017.

The 45% of this book I read was good, but the disease angle stressed me out. I suspect if I'd read it before the pandemic started, it would have been 4.5 stars.

This was fabulous. Quick paced, lots of action. River and Ava had great communication. The verbal sparring was excellent. The ride Julie Rowe took us on was super enjoyable.
