A fantastic graphic novel. I learnt a lot. I would only change the order the stories were presented in, some information given later in the book would have been helpful to know from the start, although I think the author had her reasons for the way she laid it all out.

The illustrations blew me away at every turn!! They were part of the narrative in a way I’ve never seen before. I’ve read plenty of graphic novels that would be just the same without illustrations, but Wake integrates picture and story so seamlessly that it would be impossible to separate them. The narrative itself is a work of wonder: creative, imaginative, and raw.

Hall turned her dissertation into a graphic novel, does it get more bad ass than that?

Very insightful on the history of Black women during the slave trades, beautifully illustrated and really went straight to the heart. Thinking about all the stories we'll never get to hear because history erased them entirely
