Another fun installment in the Magic Tree House series. This time we got to meet Bess and Harry Houdini and visit 1908 Coney Island, New York while discovering another secret of greatness. My elementary age kids love these stories as well as the illustrations.
Hurry Up, Houdini! by Mary Pope Osborne (book) This a young readers book from the Magic Tree House. My kid picked this chapter book out from his school library. We wanted to read it fast because we only had a week to read it! The author writes about a brother sister combo who provides life lessons. In this one their lesson is humility and hard work. I like that there was a little feminist twist. The kids travel back in time to meet The Great Houdini and his wife/apprentice, Bess. But instead of learning a lesson from the famous magician, they learn from Bess. I also liked that the author actually does her research. The historical people are real and their characteristics and likings. It was fun to figure out climax with my son. We were both shocked! The only thing that bothered me is there is a “magic powder” the kids inhale to become “magical” and have extra confidence to do things they typically can’t on their own without the magical powder - ummm not sure I like this idea. Think about it …
Step into the world of magic and illusion with Jack and Annie as they meet the famous magician, Harry Houdini. The story is filled with intriguing magic tricks and historical details about Houdini's life. The blend of mystery and history makes it a fascinating read. This is perfect for young readers who are fascinated by magic and famous historical figures. -Teen Volunteer Adhyyan R.
Oh nostalgia. These books are what got me into reading at a young age and as an ESL student. I always recommend these books to young readers who are interested in getting into chapter books. Just the right amount of history and fun, making you want more adventures with Jack and Annie.
Eleanor says: my favorite part was when they found out their friend Harry was really Harry Houdini.

Review by Max, Age 5 “there was some parts that I didn’t care for, like the beginning. “
I really really like this book. It's my number one favorite book at the moment.
I loved this book so much. It's the first one of the series I've read even though it's the most recent book (#50.) I'm completely in love with the characters and the writing. It's so charming, and exactly what I needed.
