NICK CARAVEO I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

the .5 taken off is bc of how much the characters in this books expected nick to know but never told him?? like, sure, he’s a little slow, and i figured it out easily, BUT CAN YOU BLAME HIM?? HE’S A LITTLE GUY FROM WISCONSIN WHO LOVES MATH AND HAS NO REASON TO SEARCH FOR THE 20 HIDDEN MEANINGS IN EVERYTHING YOU SAY.

“did you really not know—?” “had you never noticed—?”
PLEASE LEAVE MY SON ALONE, HE’S NOT VERY OBSERVANT AND YOU CRYPTIC SONS OF BITCHES WEREN’T REALLY HELPING THINGS, SO STOP MAKING HIM FEEL DUMB FOR NOT KNOWING!!

okay, my personal gripe with that aside, this book is literally perfect. i’d eat up a great gatsby inspired story any day, but a retelling with T4T gatsby and nick, latinx nick and daisy, and lesbian daisy?? IM OVER THE FUCKING MOON

ate this book up in a day. under 24 hours. IT WAS JUST TOO PERFECT AND IDC IF IM ABSOLUTELY SUFFERING FROM RECENCY BIAS AND THE FACT THAT IT’S 2 AM, I WILL SING THIS BOOKS PRAISES TO THE WORLD!!

I am always a bit skeptical when walking into a retelling but McLemore gives this classic an updated and fresh reimagining. I loved the queering of this classic novel and think it works perfectly. McLemore breathes life into all the characters and I loved and was rooting for them all, even Daisy (I mean, except for Tom...he's still a jerk). Oh, and Meyer Wolfsheim is now the most interesting and cool lesbian. The slow-burn romance(s) made me so happy. Readers are also introduced to life in 1922 New York, the stock market, lavender marriages, and 1920s queer community. I really appreciated the look at gender roles and the racism felt by some of the characters (many who were ignored in Fitzgeralds original story). Richly imagined, wonderfully Latinx, this book looks at identity and acceptance and I loved every minute of it.
This is part of Macmillan's Remixed Classics series where authors from diverse backgrounds take different literary classics and reinterpret them through their own unique cultural lens. I think this is an exciting way to get new readers interested in classic stories but I wonder if students who haven't been introduced to The Great Gatsby yet will enjoy it as much as someone familiar with the story. I will be curious to hear what students have to say!

the first half of this book was so dreadfully boring, but the end saved it! there were some things I didn't expect, but that's probably just me. it felt a little rushed, which is part of the reason why I gave a lower rating.

I've never read The Great Gatsby, but I really enjoyed this version.
There was a LOT going on in this book, but I think the author took care to treat each subject with respect. Nothing felt thrown in because it was expected, everything fit nicely.
